Game 8: New Hope Christian College

A cheap way to get back to .500!

No disrespect, but never heard of this college until this season's schedule came out! Got to win this one and get ready for the next home game against Walla Walla. Can't wait for the Pavilion and hopefully better competition.

Who do we play after Walla Walla, the Washington Generals? ;-)

To echo your thoughts, I really hope that the quality of our home schedule improves with the Pavilion.

You can pretty much count on one hand how many quality teams we've hosted in recent memory.

(AP) PORTLAND, Oreg. -- Traylin Farris was 12 of 13 from the field for 26 points as Portland State started slow but dominated the second half to roll over New Hope Christian College 110-79 on Tuesday night.

Farris also had 11 rebounds for the Vikings who have hit or passed the century mark three times this season, losing to Cal State Fullerton in overtime 106-100 and beating George Fox 113-81.

Deontae North added 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Brandon Hollins made 7 of 9 field goals for 15 points and De'Sean Parsons chipped in 14 for Portland State (4-4).

Both teams were hitting 50 percent from the field in the first half as they entered the break tied at 52. The Vikings finished shooting 57 percent while New Hope Christian cooled to 40.5 percent. The Deacons did hit 13 of 32 from long range.

Steven Shares had 22 points and Isiah Large 20 for New Hope.

I can’t stand games like this. If you stomp them into the ground, you should have. If you struggle (like oh, I don’t know, allowing 52 points in the first half and being down in the second half at one point), it may be cause for concern.

Some thoughts:

- Chalupas!

- Given Tucker’s injury history, I’m a bit concerned about him missing a third straight game with his knee. I hope it’s precautionary so that he’s 100% for conference play, but there’s also something to be said about logging minutes on the floor to get more comfortable as a team.

- Come on Farris, hit your free throws. Kidding, what a line he had. Double double with 12 of 13 shooting in 23 minutes, and throw in a block and a steal.

- One thing I really love about college hoops is the “shooters chance,” and New Hope sure showed that in the first half by going 10-16 from beyond the arch. Not so much in the second half with 3-16.

- The listed attendance of 206 was pretty generous.

- How in the hell has New Hope played 18 games so far? What do they play double headers or something?

- Montie Leunen WILL hit a three at some point this season and it will be huge.

Well, on to San Francisco on Friday. Should be an interesting test to see where we’re at given that they’ve played two Big Sky teams so far. They beat up on Sac State and lost to Eastern for their only loss on the season. Sac State is down in the bottom of the standings while Eastern leads the Big Sky and actually received some Mid Major Top 25 votes this past week.
