I agree, I thought the OL did well for the first game. Our deep passing game was really the only part of our offense that was outright bad. We tried to throw the fly to the outside as a timing pattern and it never worked once, which is scary given how bad Nevada's pass D was. Taiwan was off-the-hook, definitely living up to the preseason hype. I believe he had about 220 total yards.
The defense needs a lot of work. The pistol makes it hard for the DL to really shine because everything gets pushed laterally, so it's hard to say how things went there. The Nevada announcers had a lot of good things to say about Jolley. We looked really bad at OLB and safety eatly on, but we seemed to improve after the disastrous first quarter. Still, we may have been even worse had it not been for 3-4 dropped passes that ended Nevada drives. The good news is that this was probably the best and most difficult to prepare for offense we'll face this season.
And our special teams were very "special." Two bad punt snaps, two big returns given up, not very impressive. They put us in a two TD hole early by giving up possession deep. You're not going to win big games with mistakes like that.
All in all, nto a bad first game and a result that was expected. I always thought our season would hinge on winning at least 3 of the next 4 anyway, so we need to build on this. And dammit, our QB and receivers need to get in synch on those long balls as that would have changed the game yesterday.
