game planning

How does a coach game plan for playoffs? Do they keep some things off the field in the earlier games to use in closer later games? How many past game films do teams exchange?

I'm not sure on that one, but I'm hoping we only have to use about a quarter of the play book to beat Wagner.

I feel like Coach Baldwin is the type who will play the game straight up regardless of the occasion of the game. That being said, I would hope that in next weeks game we execute well enough that we can stick to our basics.

The athletic departments can request whatever game films they want from the other school. Most teams look at 3-4 games, usually the most recent along with games against teams who play the closest style of football to your own.

I'm not sold this is some sort of gimme. Eastern will win if they come out and play great. But if Eastern comes out lacking focus or intensity, this team is good enough to create problems and possibly even spring the upset. This is not a good style matchup for our defense, they run a lot of different option looks and we have struggled with tackling at the first point of contact.

Whatever struggles we had against the option, we corrected. As proven by the Cal Poly game.
:+1:

Wagner doesn't have much on CP's option offense, and we handled them. Wagner looked a lot slower and less coordinated. Their QB is a playmaker, so spy him and play sound assignment football from sideline to sideline like we did against CP, and we'll cruise.

They don't even have a fan forum. It just seems like with such a small fan base, who would pay so much to travel and face a team they are expected to get stomped by. There may be a few rich fans there, but it seems like Wagner fans will be a rare sight.

When is the last time you attended an Eastern away game? If you did not count families of players there MAY be a dozen people there. So don't get too high and mighty about traveling fans, we don't have many either.
I am not as overconfident about this game as many are. They are an 8 win regular season team and on a 9 game winning streak. They will most likely play their best game of the season and if the Eagles take them lightly and allow them to hang around we could get beat. Momentum is a powerful thing and if they get it we will have our hands full.
While they may not be as deep as we are they have several players at skill positions that will burn us.

HA, I never tooted our own horn either. I was simply stating that if a team has a weaker fan base than our own, can we expect more than a few fans to travel?

I've been reading over at AGS and it seems like to many people are taking this game lightly, at least this is what I understood between all of the Montana and MSU bickering. I think Wagner is going to come out tough and play mistake free football like they have their last nine games. It's much easier being the underdog and coming into a game like this. We definetaly have the tools to win, but we need to play much better than we have in past games. Our rush defense has had some difficult games. They appear to run the zone read option type offense that has given us fits in the past along with a very accurate QB that they pick their spots with. We better be focused and ready to play.

I totally agree. I worry a little that the team is perceiving this as an easy win as well. I know Coach Baldwin will work hard to drive that mentality off. When we play bad, a lot of inferior teams can beat us. Wagner is 9-3 and knows how to win, and we're coming off a game with a 3-8 opponent that we darn near lost. We can't bring that "dink around and try to win it on a few plays in the 4th quarter attitude" to the playoffs (I wish we never showed that attitude).

A team like Wagner thrives on those kind of games as well. Getting this game off on the right foot is critical. Make the running team play from behind. If we get caught chasing the game, they have a great shot. If we force them to chase the game, we're almost certainly going to win. Hopefully we see a full throttle effort for all 60 minutes... and then repeat it the week after... and after...and one more time in January.

I think many of us saw a game this last weekend that an inferior opponent was left to hang around and it came back to bite the Huskies in the arse. We have to come out mentally focused for 60 minutes and play our game!

Fans and Internet "pundits" may be taking this game lightly but the coaching staff and players (particularly the older ones who have gone through the 2010 playoff run) most assuredly are not. This weekend has given them a couple of days to get body and mind rested and refreshed. As for our rush defense - see Cal Poly game.

I think we are going to be hearing the cannon go off a lot on Saturday. Wagner will be tough, but we are the better team....

Crazy that we are hosting a team from NYC on the red turf, it will be really cool.

I'm hoping your right about that. Sometimes players listen and start beleiving what is going on around them. If they hear that it should be a gimme enough times they may start to beleive it. I know that the coaching staff isn't preaching this but I hope they are instilling the need to get off to a good start and to play a complete game. As for our run defense I don't think you can look at just the Cal Poly game, there are many instances including our latest performances since the Cal Poly game. We have given up over 850 yards with over 350 of that on the ground in our last two games against far inferior Portland State and UC Davis.
