Final Causeway thoughts:
I thought this game would be more of a shootout and not a defensive slugfest. The Hornet defense got it done. Their offense came into this game racking up loads of yards and points. Aside from the drive at the end of the 1st half and one fluke play late in the 4th quarter, the Hornets kept them in check, tightening up when needed and limiting them to just a couple of field goals and getting a huge stop in crunch time to seal the win. The Hornets were using the boom stick with frequency and were able to get pressure on the quarterback throughout the game. The Hornets also did a great job disrupting a lot of those quick hitter wide receiver screen passes they like to run. Mapu, Bailey, and Harris each had 7 tackles on the game to lead this unit.
Offensively the Hornets did just enough. There were plenty of chances for the Hornets to blow this game wide open but the execution wasn’t there in critical situations for that to happen. The Hornets did come through in the clutch and controlled the tempo and burned clock for much of the 4th quarter. O’Hara (7/8, 54 yds, 15 car, 50 yds, 2 TD) had a couple of big runs for scores and Skattebo (19 car, 97 yds) had some impactful touches. Martin (3 rec, 49 yds) had 2 huge catches late in the 4th to extend drives and burn the clock.
Special teams is what tipped the scale in the Hornets favor. Of all the runs in the game, the biggest was punter McGough who caught them napping with an impromptu 20 yard run on a 4th and 11 that extended a drive that led to the game winning touchdown. Sentkowski (2/3 FG, 3/3 PAT) finally missed a field goal, but had a clutch field goal late that forced them to drive the length of the field in the closing seconds.
Another Causeway win, and similarly to the 2019, we got to enjoy their trickery and gimmicks backfiring in our favor. A double pass that went nowhere, multiple wide receiver screen passes that were blown up at the line, an absurd lateral play on a kick return late in the game that cost them a shot at the endzone on the final drive. All that 5D chess nonsense that usually worked under past regimes is costing them in arguably the most important game of the season.
Not only did this win secure a 3rd straight Causeway victory, an undefeated regular season, another BSC title, and a 2-seed in the playoffs; but most importantly it ended the season of their self proclaimed “best team in program history” and squashed what small playoff hopes they had going into Selection Sunday. Now they have all offseason to reckon with the fact that this Hornet program is far superior to theirs by every metric measurable and question what they can possibly do to come close to matching the level of success the Hornets are currently enjoying. They also have to face the realization that they may never win another Causeway so long as Coach Taylor is on our sideline.
Thank you President Nelsen and Orr for investing in this program and making the moves that made this possible. Thank you Coach Taylor, staff and players for taking care of business and making this such an amazing ride.
11-0, Back to back to back Causeway winners, back to back to back Big Sky Champions.
