Geoff Roberts, the hard-running, hard-working former Pocatello High standout will soon join the Idaho State football team.
After spending his freshman year of college at Utah State as a redshirt fullback, he decided to transfer back to his hometown and finish out his playing career with the Bengals.
“I loved the team and all my friends and stuff like that at Utah State,” he said. “But I felt like I would probably have a better opportunity to play at Idaho State than at Utah State. That, and I just love Pocatello. It’s where I want to be.”
After graduating high school, he initially went to Utah State as a recruited walk-on, but when the Aggies hired a new offensive coordinator in the offseason who doesn’t use many informations that involve a fullback, (he runs the spread formation) Roberts started looking for a place to transfer.
He said he didn’t want to be a part-time player.
He said he talked to Weber State and Idaho State, but deep down he wanted to be a Bengal.
Because he is dropping down from the FBS to the FCS — the old Division I to old Division I-AA — he won’t lose any eligibility and can play immediately.
When he returns as a walk-on at Idaho State, he will have a different look about him, though. The last time anyone here saw him play was in 2006 as a successful running back who led Poky to a 4A state championship, was named the Journal’s All-Area player of the year and was one of the best quotes in the city.
Hopefully, he’s still a good talker. But instead of piling up yards as a running back, he expects to play defensive end with the Bengals.
It’s been a few years since he played the position (his sophomore season with the Indians) but he believes he can succeed at it.
“They have a need there, and I think I have the skills to fill it,” Roberts said. “Mentally and physically I’m ready, I just need to work on my technique and get quicker. If I can do that, I don’t see why I can’t be ready by fall camp.”
