Glen Dean to Utah

I hate Utah.

EWU picked up a nice JC in Collin Chiverton. Redshirted for St. Mary's, should be a really nice replacement though losing Dean after he was thought to be staying is weird.

Talented player for sure, but I personally don't think he has Pac 10 talent. That's how the previous Utah coaches lost their jobs, they failed to bring in talent to match the league they were playing in. That and the fact that Boylen was an A$$ hole.

WTF?? Seriously?? For Dean this is a great move. For Utah, I'm not so sure. What this will do is hurt the Eagles. By the end of last season the Eagles three starting guards (Colimon, Forbes, and Dean) had meshed and were playing very well together. Dean was the keystone to the rotation. Yes, Eastern still has plenty to build off of, but now they have to find another team leader. I think they should be fine, but it might take them a few games next year to mesh again. Yes the Eagles did sign a talented JC guard, but he isn't Glen Dean. I'm guessing Colimon or Forbes can eventually replace this loss. Still, I think Eastern will be much better next year. As for the Utes...I'm not so sure.

He's a 5'10" guard playing in the Pac 12. I think he went from being a starter on an up-and-coming Big Sky Team to a talented reserve in Utah's program.

no prob. dean is used to losing to weber. he can continue that this fall at the dee. he'll still have a red uniform on. it will be like old times. its not a bad move for dean. he can play in pac 10 just like may other big sky players could. dean would be big sky mvp candidate next yr. maybe evn last yr if it wasnt for his injury.

maybe utah didnt steal him from ewu. he probably wanted to leave since earlywine wasnt retained. that is too bad. kirk had a top 4 team for sure if not top 3.

boylen was an idiot but larry is a good guy from what i hear. i cant remember much about him with the griz since he only stayed for a cup of coffee. i think utah has a chance to have a respectable program again. utah likes jerks for coaches though and good guys they fire. so how did boylen get fired? lol. giacoletti was the only quality guy they have hired since before majerus. maybe larry will be respected in-state and in the pac.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

2010-11 Byron Fulton, Weber State (soph to be at WSU)
2009-10 Glen Dean, EWU (Transferred to Utah)
2008-09 Damian Lillard, Weber State (jr to be at WSU)
2007-08 Vinnie McGhee, Jr., Sac (Transferred to CS Northridge)
2006-07 Cameron Rundles, UM (Transferred to Wofforrd)
2005-06 Rodney Stuckey, EWU (Left for NBA after soph yr)
2004-05 Logan Kinghorn, ISU

Kinghorn was the last big sky player to finish at a big sky school that won the fresh of the year award.

This is odd:

APRIL 7, 2011 - GLEN DEAN STAYING AT EASTERN
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/apr/07/glen-dean-staying-eastern/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

“I’ve reached a decision to stay here,” said Dean, “I’m going to go ahead and finished it out at Eastern Washington, remain an Eagle and try to help our team win the Big Sky championship.”

“I kind of knew what I wanted to do all along,” Dean said. “But after I got my release, I talked with my family and a couple of my closest friends, and decided I’m comfortable at Eastern. I’ve got good friends around me here, who I feel can help me succeed not only on the court, but in the classroom, too.

Hayford was understandably elated by Dean’s decision.

“He obviously is a big part of our team,” said Hayford, who was officially introduced as the Eagles’ new coach on Mar. 29, “so I was really happy when he told me he wanted to be a part of what were doing here at Eastern. I’m really pleased that we’re 10 days into this now, and that all of the player have told me they are staying.

“I think we’re getting off to the right kind of start.”

I think Eastern will still be improved over last year. Dean is the only major loss that the Eagles program is having after a coaching change. Also, there are a number of other talented guards on their roster. Colimon, at the end of the season, looked like the key to Easterns future success (even though he only has one more year).

We all know that Dean would have finished his career at Eastern if Earlywine would have been able to stay. Kinda a bummer deal for Dean though...yes, he will play at a PAC school, but he probably wont ever be a starter. CATCAT is right, Dean will continue to lose to Weber.

i think he will be a utah starter. dean is better than we remember. he got screwed over last yr like Dame. utah aint Duke.

Yeah...maybe... He is the best guard they have had in almost a decade. I'm sure that LK called Dame too. Kidding...

Utah is going to be awful the next couple of years. LK said yesterday he doesn't see JJ O'briens future at Utah because he's taken too long to decide what he's going to do. If anyone has paid attention to the recruits they're getting up on the hill to fill all of their holes they look below average at best, none of which I would want at Weber, except Mathews who LK did retain, and Odunsi, maybe Dotson. The 5 JC's look like roster fillers.

Glen Dean will be a 2 year starter at Utah, and one of their best players over the next 3 years.

I still maintain EWU will challenge the conference for a top 2 spot behind Weber in the Big Sky next season, and maybe challenge WSU a little.

Dean did have 26 points against Weber in Cheney, but had only 7 in Ogden in the last reg season game, and only 1 point in the 1st Round tournament game a few nights later. It was those 2 games where EWU looked especially dangerous beating us, and putting up a good fight in the first round. They also knocked off Montana right before those 2 games as well.

EWU's newest signee, JC transfer Collin Chiverton 6'6 Wing who can shoot the 3. Averaged 20 pts a game last season, after averaging 15 pts per at SLCC in 09'-10'. He was an ESPN Top 150 recruit out of high school, and California Top 10 recruit as well. He Redshirted at St. Mary's before heading to SLCC.

Besides guards Jeoffrey Forbes, and Cliff Coliman, Point Guard Kevin Winford lead EWU in scoring 6 times last season with outbursts of 39 & 28, and was the Eagles 4th leading scorer at 10 per game. They also have 6'3 Guard Willie Hankins who will be a Redshirt Freshman this next season he was recruited by San Jose, Loyola and a few other Cali schools, but ended up at EWU because of academic difficulties.

6'5 G/Wing Geoffrey Allen is talented as well, but got hampered by an early season broken wrist.

Tremayne Johnson poses all sorts of matchup problems for Weber and is Easterns most talented player, coupled with Griffin/Ederaine inside they won't miss a beat without Dean because they are loaded with Guards who can play.

I think Dean will have a chance to start for Utah in 2 years... they are very down right now. With a year to learn the program he will be a nice asset for the Utes. Granted, they will probably be in the bottom half of the Pac-12, but still a nice player for them to get.

Yep, this one hurts. But we've got a bunch of guards and just signed a couple bigger players which is what we needed. I still think we'll be better next season than we were this year.

Ranger, Eastern will definitely be better. I think, if they didn't have so many early season injuries, that they would have done a lot better throughout the season. No matter, your Eagles ended the season strong. Those two games at the Dee reminded me of the early 2000 games when Giac was the Eastern coach and there was a slight basketball rivalry between Weber and Eastern.

Right now it is kinda hard to measure the Sky, but I think the conference as a whole is improving.

Actually who all left the program and how many players did you guys sign this spring?

Earlywine was able to get physically tallented guys into their program. It looked to me like some were good team players and some were not. If this new coach can mold these guys into a team, they could be very good. If not, they could fall apart in short order. I hope for EWU that this coach is the one to put it all together. Time will tell. This year, EWU could be a top 3 team or not make the post season. It is really hard to know what to expect. I think the teams that will improve the most will be NAU and SAC ST. The team that will drop the most will be UNC. If everyone stays healthy, there is no question, in my mind, that Weber is head and shoulders above the rest of the Sky. :coffee:
