Grading the Game

My personal ratings: can't wait to see everyone elses.

QB - C (something isn't working between Kaufmann and Bo Levi this year on deep TD passes. They are not on the same page). Bo is not throwing deep accurately and Kaufman isn't getting open on those throws. Suggestion: try putting in his brother Cory once in awhile and see if it clears his head. That is the main reason he came to EWU in the first place and Cory did great in Spring. Could be starting to frustratre him.

WR Coach: D- (see above).

O-Line: D I saw the linemen standing there ready to block someone after they had already sacked Bo. WTF. After the great job at Washington, what happened?

D-Line: Same as O-Line D. No pressure and so many missed tackles you put too much pressure on the LB's and secondary.

RB's - F non-exisitent. We need to be more than one dimensional.

WR's - A (except Kauffman)

Defense - D (terrible effort)

Coaching: F (first time I've seen Baldwin get outcoached and it wasn't pretty). We need some major changes or we are going to get our asses handed to us every week.

Special Teams: B Unexpected bright spot on the whole team.

Please, for everyone's sake, quit posting after you've been drinking. You're not doing anyone any favors by calling out your sons' teammates AND coaches. Yes, we know you think your son Cory should play. There are about 70 other sets of parents of non-starters that probably feel the same way. He's been given an opportunity at EWU (not ESU), let HIM make the most of it. Your not helping with this crap.

Now, if guys aren't giving it their best shot then it's time to shake things up, rattle some cages, give the hungry guy a shot. I'm pretty sure we saw the start of that message with the RB's today. Let's see if it has an affect. If guys are dropping the ball consistently, sit 'em down. Likewise, If QB's are throwing unforced INT's, let them think about it on the sidelines. If D-linemen are taking plays off, let them take a couple quarters off while resting on the bench.

I'm just sayin'...

The running backs caught several passes out of the backfield for big yards, especially Talley, so I would not give them an "F". Receivers did not play an "A" game as there were many dropped passes. Kaufman was off and seemed to give up on a few plays after such a dominating performance. The right side of our line seemed very young. Bottom line is we got out coached and out played and that happens from time to time even with good teams.

Just for shits and giggles, here is my analysis of the game.

QB: I didn't think we'd try as many pass attempts this week as we did against UW, but it was pretty close - 60 attempts. Two picks, one of which Bo dialed in on the receiver a little too much. I can't remember what happened on the second one. As I said before, when you are throwing the ball 60-70 times a game, it's hard to get too critical about Int's because the defense is sitting back expecting the pass every play. It wasn't a bad performance by Bo and certainly not why we lost the game, although there's always things that can be cleaned up. (C)

RB: Our running game at the moment isn't there. They are a young group and will get better as the season progresses, but it begins with the play of the O-Line. Hard to be too critical of the backs when there aren't any holes being opened up and the backs are forced to slide outside and get around the corner and getting tackled. In my opinion the only way we will be able to get any consistent yards from running is going to be by attacking the LOS head-on with quick hitting plays. The draws and misdirection stuff is working at times but it seems like that's all we're trying to do. Mario is a good back in space but with the lack of run-blocking at the moment I would like to see us give Bronson more carries and let's see if he can pound on some people long enough to open things up elsewhere. He had one carry for 5 yards in this game. On a bright note, our backs have been really good catching the ball out of the backfield. Also, for a True Freshman, Talley has played well in his first two games for as little action as he's seen. Would like to also see what Forte can do out there, we pulled redshirts on these guys for a reason, right? (D)

WR: Nick Edwards was the bright spot in this one. I think he played really well. Overall, it seemed like there were quite a few dropped balls. Some were probably catcheable, some probably were not. When you are relying almost entirely on your passing game to move the ball, that can't happen. It also seemed like at times, there were WR's giving up on plays. I think this may have been due to fatigue - those guys must be gassed at times running all those routes. We have a lot of depth at WR, so I will agree that perhaps we need to get other guys more playing time. Not only will it help build confidence in our backups, but it will help keep our starters stay a little more fresh running up and down the field all day. (B)

TE: Gehring had a couple of nice grabs just as he did in the UW game. I would like to see us use our TE's more in check-down situations. That worked well in the UW game. TE's haven't been too great in run blocking so far, but that's not specific to them. (C)

OL: With two All-American Seniors on this squad, I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. Our pass protection, which looked stellar in the first game seems to have dropped off some in this one. Our run blocking was almost non-existent. They are not driving the D-line back to open anything up. Everyone is getting on the backs, but it's hard to do anything when you have no holes to get through. That said, we have two guys starting on the right side that played their first significant time in the UW game. I am hoping that Will Post will be healthy enough for the Montana game to at least see some playing time, because right now we are feeling the loss of his presence, not only on a talent level, but also because of the fact that we have fewer guys to rotate in and out. (D)

DL: Tackles couldn't get enough penetration and the Ends couldn't contain. I was actually a little surprised by that, as I thought we'd be able to contain their QB a little bit better with all the athletes we have there. It wasn't horrible, though - there were a lot of times our Ends beat their blocks badly and just over-ran their QB. Lots of missed tackles that were near sacks, but credit their QB - he was very mobile. Would have liked to seen a little bit more of Ceja, because he is probably our fastest DE and probably would have helped contain a little more on passing situations. Lots of missed tackles, a couple of which would have been huge plays. (C-)

LB's: I really thought our LB's played well in the UW game, but in this one, not so much. Zach seems to be hampered by some sort of injury because he just doesn't look as mobile or quick to the point of attack as he usually does. Could be wrong there. Overall we are not playing at anywhere near the same standard as we were late last season, with almost the same personnel minus JC. Lots of missed tackles. (C)

CB's: I was really impressed with our CB's the first game but as with almost every other position their play seemed to drop off some. I was really impressed with how they stepped up against the run in the first game and wonder where that went yesterday. Again, lots of missed tackles. Another position that we seem to have a very steep learning curve at, but they will improve. (C)

Safeties: Have been decent so far in run stopping but got beaten really badly by the long ball a couple times in this one. Nice pick by Matt. I think he might also have gotten another sack, can't remember. (C)

*Edit* - Forgot Special Teams - Another bright spot. They played well for the most part. Gotta ask the question, though: Are we ever going to give our kicker a chance? In the first qtr it seems like we got greedy by going for it on 4th down. That early in the game you have to give your kicker a chance and take the points. Turning the ball over on possessions took away all our momentum and contributed to us going in that deep hole early. Any points would have helped at that point. I wasn't critical of the decision in the UW because in that situation you go for the win - but I think we kick the FG down 7-0 early in the game against an FCS opponent. Just my opinion. (B)

Overall:

Offense - C
Defense - C

The good news is that all of this can be fixed pretty quickly. It's not as if the talent isn't there. We all know it is. It's just up to the players on how successful they want to be this season, because I still believe we have the ingredients to be a playoff team. Most glaring deficiencies are in the play of the lines and I hope we can right the ship some in that regard. I guess that's enough babbling. Hope this doesn't come across as being too critical, but there's really no reason to sugar-coat. :thumb:

Go Eags!

I actually thought missed tackles was our biggest problem...
That set the stage for the whole game ! Make those tackles and they go 3 and out ! haven't seen that lack of concentration before on this team ! We laid an egg, now its time to scramble it ! GOEAGS

Posted this under the other Topic about the USD Game too:

The beauty of the FCS vs. the BCS is that neither of these games matter. FCS teams (unlike BSU v Georgia where their seasons are ruined if they loose the 1st game) have a chance to use these games to find a rhythm, get past injuries, try to work on timing, work new players in, or just find problems to work on like I think we have exposed and I know the coaches will fix.

I would much rather play tough competition early when it does not matter and find weaknesses or flaws then wait until later in the season when it will matter. As a HS coach, with far less knowledge then our staff, I learn way more about our team in losses then in wins. 2 years ago we had a fairly new team and we played a easy game to start the season that made us feel overconfident. Luckily we played a much larger school the next week before we started our season that exposed players and our scheme that we were able to correct. Long story short we went undefeated in league, made the playoffs and unfortunately lost to the State Champions, then followed that season up with a Undefeated State Champion Team. I credit that loss to the school with over 4 times our enrollment with our ability to do that.

Talking to coaches in my area ISU used their game with WSU to play many 2nd and 3rd team players so they could get them on film in a game as well as keeping 1st string players from getting hurt. May be just HS coaches B.S.'ing me but not a totally bad idea when you think that they made a good paycheck that helps the program and used the game to evaluate what they have before starting their season.

EWU is a great school, with a great football team and coaches, and I am proud to be associated with this school and team and win or loose I have picked my side and will stay here supporting it

As a parent of a player (on defense) I usually read negative posts and let things go ... it's more healthy that way. I think we can all agree that parents have a unique interest in the game and the analysis and, while I respect everyone's opinion, I want to comment on an aspect of this particular comment that may have gone unrecognized. No doubt, both the Mitchell brothers are excited about playing together and they and their family have probably talked about it a great deal. As a consequence, there may be a subconscious part of Bo Levi that is sabotaging what has been a successful connection between him and Kaufmann. If that is happening, he needs to figure it out, without the voices (especially of Dad) that may be part of the problem, lobbying for more playing time for his brother. If he is not able to do so, not only is the team's season in jeapardy, but also his future as a professional player.

Here's hoping that in a few weeks we're all looking back at these two games and saying that was the foundation upon which we built our winning streak.

I'd say the South Dakota game was pretty much an F on every level. We got beat by a team that wasn't just not as good, but not nearly as good as us. That never gets a passing grade.

It was hard to say much negative about the UW game because we played hard for 4 quraters and fought the whole way. Losing that one didn't bother me much. If we had half the fight on Saturday as we had the previous Saturday, we likely win by 4 TDs.

Perhaps a letdown was inevitable, but it's not excusable. I sure wish we had been playing Southern Oregon at home this weekend instead of travelling 1,500 miles to play a team for no money and no return game in a domed stadium with crappy turf.

The main reason Bo Levi came to EWU was so that he could play with Cory? It wasn't so he could play after having lost his starting spot at SMU? It wasn't for love of the game? If he's getting frustrated because of this and it's messing with his game, then my suggestion would be to get a QB in there that just wants to compete, win and doesn't care who is playing so long as everyone is doing what it takes to get the job done.

Kauffman was being recruited by Division 1 schools prior to an injury his senior year. He SHOULD be in the game - period. Not to mention Nick Edwards and Greg Herd are also pulling in some phenomenal catches! Cory had a great spring, true, but Kauffman was still healing from his surgery.

Cory should be thankful for the opportunity to get a free education and an opportunity to value "team" and hard work. He was brought in without ever having been recruited and given a full-ride, because of Bo Levi. You seem to be looking a gift horse in the mouth. Greed makes people ugly. If I were you, I'd just be thankful two of my kids have the grand opportunity for a free education.

Easy, folks. We're all on the same side here. We all have our opinions on things that could be done to make the team play better, but do bring players up by name and speculate on things is not helpful, and to be quite honest, is sort of disrespectful to the kids that are out there working their asses off in practice, games, and oh yeah.....SCHOOL. These are student-athletes, not professionals. Sometimes I think people forget that. I have a lot of opinions about things, but I don't express them on here out of respect to the players and coaches. It's not helpful. The players are under enough pressure without the fans adding fuel to the fire. It's starting to look like egriz did last season on here.

We're 0-2, that is the reality. Time to pick ourselves up and get to work. Anyone think it's going to be a rough day at practice today?

Cheap shot Dozy. Why wouldn't a parent root for their kid? Besides he is right that Kaufman gaving up on his team and himself in that game. I saw him running into other receivers, quitting on routes, in particular the last int. He gave up and the defender did not thus the int. Then he only made a half hearted attempt to tackle the guy. Based on what I saw at the game he would be sitting, regardless of his talent level, and someone else would get the start.

I for one thoroughly enjoy posting on here while intoxicated. It makes for some spectacular day-after reading

Hardly a cheap shot, Clawman. The kid is good enough to make it on his own and doesn't need daddy campaigning for him.

As far as benching players that don't give it their all, I'm all for it. I don't care if you're an All-American or a kid in his first game. If you don't lay it on the line every down, you don't play. You certainly don't start. Hey, mistakes get made, sometimes you get outplayed, sometimes you're just not in the play but there is no excuse for lack of effort and quitting...

Agreed.

Ok...now most have had there chance to vent, take a deep breath...now it is time to move onto the Griz. Nothing we can do about the South Dakota game now, all of us were upset, and a lot of posters made great points, but now it is time to move on.

Time to take out the frustrations on the Grizzlies. We always play well in Missoula and I'm looking for Eastern to just stomp the griz.

Great post Marc and I agree completely. There's no doubt in my mind that the Coaches and Senior leadership on this team will sort this shit out and get back to playing EWU football. :thumb:

This is an open forum...If I get frustrated I will express my opinion. I'll call out anyone I want and so should you. I'm upset with the loss but ready to move on to Montana. Let's hope the coach's got the message and will have the boy's ready, THIS TIME.
