...On the most recent "This Week in Big Sky Football" broadcast, The Sports Network's David Coulson said if the top three Big Sky teams managed to finish with three or fewer losses, they are "fairly certain" to get into the FCS playoffs. I'm not sure if non-conference losses count there, but this is still a very nice outlook either way....
Since the minimum number of D1 wins to be considered for a playoff invitation is 7, only WSU (7-2, 5-0), UM (7-1, 3-1) and NAU (7-2, 4-1) are even eligible. There are not enough games left in the season for the other BSC teams to qualify.
The Big Sky conference champion will receive an automatic bid to the playoffs. After defeating the teams in the top half of the conference, Weber State is highly likely to finish the season as the undisputed conference champs and get the automatic bid. The Wildcats would have to lose two of our remaining three conference games to be bumped out, an unlikely scenario.
Montana is likely to get an invitation by virtue of their ranking, reputation and number of wins against D1 opponents. Even if they lose to NAU next week, I think they will get an invitation.
There are only 16 teams in the playoffs, and half of them are determined by conference champion auto-bids. Northern Arizona will drop out of the top 16 after losing to Weber this weekend, and will probably have to beat Montana in Missoula to have a snowball's chance of getting a playoff invitation.
I sure hope the Lumberjacks get that chance, and that the Big Sky Conference sends three teams to the playoffs!
