Greetings from SEMO

Greetings from Cape Girardeau, MO!

Semo doesn't have a 'message board', but we basically talk at www.semoball.com, the blogs that are written by our local beat writer Marty Mishow. We basically just comment after the blogs, etc. semosportsweb is basically a High School website for our area, not a Semo fan site.

We're pretty new at this football playoff stuff, as this is the first year EVER that we have made the playoffs. I might can answer some questions, but basically we run a version of the flex option, but without a wishbone type of set. We run the option out of alot of different formations - 'single back shotgun spread' type of formation, two tight-end formation, h-back in the veer on occasion, and the old-fashioned Nebraska I-formation option. Our head coach is a former Nebraska player under Tom Osborne, and we run their 1980's style of option. We generally eat up alot of clock with our possessions, keeping our defense fresh and trying to wear down the other team's d. Our QB is really good running just like the old Nebraska QB's) but struggles in the passing game (again, just like the old Nebraska QB's lol). Our RB is very good, very quick and has the 'change of direction' ability that most good RB's need. Our OL is big, all are over 300 lbs, and our WR's our big and good blockers - the starters are 6'5 and 6'4. Our WR's struggle getting open running routes though as we lack speed at the wideout.

Defensively we play the basic 4-3-4, with our LB's being the strength. Our DL has taken a major hit losing both starting DE's in the last 2 games, both are out for the playoff game. Losing them hurts us alot, as they were both the only consistent pass rush we had, so we may have to use more blitz packages than we normally do to try and recreate that pressure they provide. Our DT's ar solid, and both will probably be 1st team all-conference, but what they try to do is take up space and let our LD's make the tackles. Our secondary is solid, but we have another injury to a starting CB, his status is unkown for the playoff game. Our free safety is a classic ballhawk, with 6 interceptions, 2 being pick 6's.

And naturally, we are somewhat upset having to travel so far and playing such a high-level opponent, but mostly we are happy to finally be a part of the playoffs. And also naturally, everyone is talking about your field. lol.

Good luck EWU, here's to a good game.

Thanks for visiting boomerang, and thanks for the info on SEMO. Congrats on your first playoff appearance. Feel free to stop by and ask all the questions you want. :D There's a bunch of folks around here that can probably answer any questions SEMO fans might have.

+1

Welcome Boomerang.

Hope you guys have a good amount of fans at the game. That is always nice. I hope it is a good game as well, but would obviously like the Eags to make a statement in the first round. Hope to see y'all at the game!

I'll be frank... I was hoping for a lesser team than SE Mo. in our first round. I was *really* hoping for one of the play-in winners, which I think we deserved being #1 and all...

I think SEMO matches up well against us. We haven't faced a team that really commits to running the ball (sans FBS #16 Nevada who runs from the pistol), especially from an option attack. It's something that'll be new to us, so it's hard to say how we'll play defensively.

I doubt we have many fans there, mostly coach's families and players' families is my guess. I'm thinking around 100 is all we'll have coming (I unfortunately won't be one of them).

There's some talk today that one of our starting DE's will be able to play in the game.

Good luck guys.

I know how that is. it's near the holidays, and expensive for last minute flights. I used air miles to go to the App St game a few years ago, away games are fun though, and when you travel that far, people will treat you like royalty.

We may not be happy as well...but we are happy to finally be in. And unfortunatly we are probably 11 sec. from having our own seed. But you win and you lose that is the name of the game. I can't wait to get up there and see the university\area. What do I need to do while visiting(sites)? Places to eat? I am a huge pizza person....so if you got a great pizza place let me know. Also someone said on another thread about having tj healthy. Who is tj? Is that your RB...what happen to him? Any tailgating going on up there or is everyone going to the Wash vs. Wash St. game?

Good work as always boomer..

I put up a thread on the OVCfans.com page, not a whole lot of people post on there, but its another site to talk semo beyond semoball.

Good luck!

tj = Taiwan Jones, Junior, RB, here's a clip to check out

There'll be tailgating and yes, it's unfortunate that the game is the same time as the Apple Cup and Spokane fans tend to gravitate to the PAC 10 (soon 12) games even when both programs are losing and hard to watch but the die Eagle fans will be out there. If you come, dress warmly and stop by any of the tailgates!

Here is Freebirds excellent breakdown on from the cs.com board:

Welcome SEMO fan. I think Eastern is a little disappointed in getting such a quality opponent in their first game too, but hey, these are the playoffs and the goal is to prove you are better than all the teams in the field.

EWU primarily runs a one back pro set with a pretty good balance between running and passing. You can see some highlights of our RB in the Payton award thread in this forum. He doesn't have quite the yards per game as your back, but he's pretty good. On defense we haven't faced an traditional option team this year, and probably haven't for many years, so that could be interesting. We have faced two teams that ran the pistol offense. Our guys are going to need play disciplined and keep their assignments if we are to be successful. We do have good team speed on defense.

As far as coming to town. Cheney is a great small college town about 20 miles from Spokane. The people are great and very friendly to guests. The closest decent hotel is the Holiday Inn Express. It's newer, clean, and very well managed, The service is great and they'll also run a shuttle to and from the game, and pretty much pick you up when you call. The cheapest places to stay will be in Airway Heights around the airport and about 15 minutes to Cheney. If you want to see the sights and have the best selection of restuarants, I'd suggest staying around river park in Spokane. It's about 20 or 25 minutes to Cheney from there. There is a nice riverwalk and park, Spokane Falls, an IMAX, Spokane Arena, a large mall, and a fun zone for the little tikes, all within walking distance. There's a pretty good Martini bar called Twigs in the mall, also within walking distance. A good local place to eat around River Park would be the Red Lion Bar and Grill (not associated with the hotel, or even on the same grounds). Good BBQ and large portions pool tables and a good selection of beers. Anythony's Seafood over looks the falls and is also quite good. There was a really good Irish pub too, but I forget the name. All the hotel chains are in the River Park area, but I'd avoid both the Red Lions. I've stayed in the tower there and it was okay, but the other rooms were dirty. When I complained they suggested upgrading to a tower room. Nice, apparently clean rooms are extra. I've also stayed at the Marriot, Double Tree, and Hilton there and been very happy. If you don't mind off chain hotels, the Oxford Suites in Spokane is my personal favorite.

For more on game day experiences see the form that Ranger recommended. You might have to dig, but there is a tailgating thread from last summer that talks about all the good local haunts.

You should definitely come out to Cheney and enjoy the playoff experience.

I'll echo his concerns about the option as BSC teams don't see it very much and look how poorly a solid Montana D dealt with Nova in the second half of the championship game last year.

That being said, run stopping is our strength on defense. We have experience and size on the line with pre-season Buchanon candidate Renard Williams and senior Tyler Jolly and a host of role players that platoon in. At linebacker we might be a bit undersized but are very fast and smart, especially Buchanon finalist JC Sherrit who lead the nation in tackles last year.

Our weakness is definitely defending the pass, but safety Matt Johnson is another playmaker who can shut down one side of the field and is very smart. We have forced 25 turnovers and 12 interceptions for a +8 turnover margin. Obviously we give up yards, are average in points allowed, but seem to make plays - especially in the red zone.

If you are able to watch the game, keep an eye out for #4 (Sherrit) and #5 (Johnson) they will be everywhere.

On offense, Taiwan Jones is an absolute highlight real both running and receiving out of the backfield, but we have other weapons. WR Brandon Kaufmann is a big target at 6'5", averages 16.8 ypc, and has 12 td's on the season. QB Bo Levi Mitchell (junior transfer from SMU)is a bit of a gunslinger with good feet and a good arm but who has also thrown his share of picks. The last few games he has seemed to settle down more and his efficiency has improved while his mistakes have decreased.

On special teams we have two KO returns for td's and two blocked punts but also have given up too many yards. Kicking was a problem earlier in the season but has seemed to improve of late. None the less, it still makes me nervous.

Weather wise it's snowing right now with high's dropping down to around 10 on Tuesday and -teens overnight. But the 8-14 day forecast show normal temps which would indicate low-mid 30's and above average precipitation.

How is your run and pass defense? Do you guys see mostly option offenses in the OVC?

Not at all. The teams in the OVC have pretty much gone spread except for TSU, UTM, and JSU. They do go spread at times but are mostly 11 or 12 personnel. We have the advantage of doing both if it is needed and have two BIG backs that come in for spells. #25 Nathan Grass...6'1 235 and #27 Mike Jones...6'0 240 come in for spells and on short yardage as both TB and FB. Most teams do allot of quick game passing with screens, bubbles, or tunnels. They will go up top on play action. Some good backs in conference and some good offensive lines. We have played in some great FCS atmospheres and have handled it well....SIU, JSU. Hopefully enough get to the game because I think this one could be a good one. I am hopefully going to be able to get in on Thursday and see the area. Haven't been to the state of Washington since I was real young.

As for our Defense....We can be up and down, but mostly we have been up. We are in the top of the conference in most categories. We have been giving up yards but most of those have been the later part of games. We are an opportunistic defense with 27 Turnovers (19 INT, 8 FMBL rec). We have taken 2 INTs for TDs and should have been 3 but just got pushed out on the 1. Teams that have been able to run on us have been when they lined up in power running formations....as we are a little undersized on the DL but are quick with our angles and games up front. We are giving up an average of 146 yds\gm rushing in 163 yds\gm passing. We have been giving up few points. Or average pts given up per game is 20.1 but that isn't all on the D. Our Kicking coverage group has been our down fall this year giving up 4 TDs in the kicking game. Most of that is due to our inconsistency of our Kicker. Hopefully they have a game plan in tact to keep the ball away from your returners.

If you can keep our offense in check and keep the D on the field you can wear us down by the 4th quarter. Stopping the O consistently has been a big problem for opposing defenses. As we are very good in 3rd down conversions and can either pound out a 12 play drive or go for 3-5 with players we have and the style we run.

We have a great Pizza place in town called Gatto's. They have some amazing Calzones. They're right on 1st Street next to Zips.

Just a video of why SEMO had such a dramatic change in record in the last year. Looks like it should be a good game! Good luck!

I would recommend Rosa's Pizza on 2nd and Mary in Cheney. Make sure you get copious amounts of ranch to dip your pizza/cheesebread/breadsticks/anything in.

Sorry, Gattos and Rosas are fine but if you're really into pizza, you have to get a calzone from Pete''s Pizza in Spokane. They're practically worth the trip from Missouri on their own. 8-)

This. Also, if you're looking in Spokane for pie, Stadium Pizza in the Shadle area is awesome as well. Rocky Rococos downtown is also worth a taste.
