Gubrud nominated for STATS offensive player of the year

Personally, I don't think he should be on the list. Not yet. Just doesn't have a consistent enough arm. Meyer, Nichols, Mitchell, and Adams all threw the ball better and only one of them won the award. Still, if he improves, he could definitely be a contender by his senior year.

Zamora is a better defensive candidate than Gubrud is an offensive candidate. No knock on Gubrud. He is one hell of a ball player and I am glad to have it. I just think that at this point in his career is is just one notch below FCS player of the year candidate.

Didn't Zamora miss two games? That's a serious knock. I think the voters want a consistent performance throughout the season and missing games takes away from statistical comparisons.

But I agree, Zamora is playing very well. I doubt he'll be concerned with it, especially with a chance to be a first-team All Big Sky selection. There was a time when I doubted anyone from our defense would be a legitimate choice for the first team of the conference, but so far, Zamora, Fettig, Tucker, and Ebukam all look like they have a shot.

I wouldn't say that Gubrud shouldn't be on the list. He's put up very good numbers this year. The issue isn't skill, just consistency. Which is to be expected from a rookie QB. He's only made 5 starts in his career. But he's shown quite a bit too. Going into an FBS statium and doing what he did to the Cougars in week 1 and following that up against #1 in the FCS on the road was very impressive. If he keeps putting up the types of numbers he has, then he should be in the conversation. He is going to have bad moments, I mean look at the UCD game, for a quarter and a half the offense was stagnant, and even then they put up 63 (and it would have been 77, but BB made the right choice not to run up the score). I look around the FCS and I really don't see anyone that is far and away doing better.

I see what you're saying RJones, but he is the statistical leader of the league...so shouldn't he be on the Watch list?

Both Meyer and Mitchell won the award. And based on stats alone, Gubrud at least belongs in the discussion. Because it usually turns out to be a "QB with the most gawdy stats" award, it wouldn't surprise me to see him finish high in the voting either, if he continues to produce at this current pace.

That being said, I agree with your point about consistency. Hope he improves that over the season.

It's funny that we are commenting that a Sophomore with only 5 starts under his belt, who is leading nationally in passing yards, needs to get more consistent. I guess I don't disagree, but it just goes to show you how high the bar is set for QBs here.

Fair points, guys. Guess I wasn't thinking about how this award is largely a numbers award. Guess in my mind, Gubrud's stats are inflated some by our insane wr corps. I suppose he does deserve to be in the discussion.

As far as pure talent, I think he is the fourth or fifth player on our team behind Kupp, Zamora, Bourne, and maybe even Kacmarcik. Still, like you have all pointed out, it's an award of numbers. I am confident that with more experience he will develop into something spectacular.

He definitely should be in the running for the award. He can improve his accuracy and seems to miss reads at times but he makes a lot of plays and improvises well. He will only improve and already plays the most difficult position in sports at a high level.

I'll just leave this here:

The Eagles had their fifth-most yards in school history, finishing with 659 for the team’s third performance this season of 600 or more. Gubrud had 514 yards of total of offense to rank fourth all-time at EWU, and in just six career starts now has five of the top 10 performances all-time at Eastern.

Gage may very well be a legitimate Payton contender by the end of the season.

Gubrud is having one helluva year and looked great yesterday. While it's certainly fair to say many of his stats are generated by the best receiving core we've ever assembled, he's still distributing the ball very well and adding another dimension with his running.

Its hard to imagine there are three other players with the numbers Gage has been producing. And Cooper should be in the running as well. Has there ever been two players from the same school up for the same award! :thumb:
I can't imagine a voter would hold it against Gage that the Eagles have a great receiving corps any more than a great QB with a bad receiving corp would get extra credit for his low production. Numbers, numbers, numbers that is what matters.
He definitely deserves to be on this stage.
I keep thinking of how good he is going to be in the next two years. WOW! Our Oline will be that much better, we have more great receivers in the pipeline, Gage will be so much more mature and these young RB's will be keeping other defenses honest.

Haven't been able to make it to a computer all weekend! Just popped in to say that Gubrud improved in of the mechanics that I knotched against him in this post. Northern Colorado did a great job in the secondary, and Gubrud did better. He had just enough patience to go through his progressions and find the right receiver. He didn't throw behind the receivers like in previous games. And finally, he put just as much power and spin on the ball as Hennessey to cut through the wind. Gubrud played at an extremely high level and definitely should be in the running if he continues to play like that every week. I regret ever doubting him.

Nice job Rjones. Hope to see GG continue to improve as well.
