Higgins' status still uncertain

OGDEN -- A Monday examination of Weber State senior quarterback Cameron Higgins' injured knee left opened the possibility he may be able to play this Saturday at Northern Arizona.

Higgins needs one more touchdown pass to break the Big Sky Conference's all-time record, but he can't throw that pass if he doesn't play this weekend against NAU or at Texas Tech the following week.

Higgins injured his left knee late in the fourth quarter of last Saturday's loss to Montana State and left the game. He had an MRI on Monday and will be re-evaluated later this week to determine his status for Saturday's 3 p.m. kickoff at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.

"His medial collateral ligament (MCL) is intact, he doesn't have a problem there," Weber State coach Ron McBride said. "The ligament that attaches to his knee cap is strained in a way, so we'll rehab him all week. We'll test him either on Friday morning or Thursday afternoon to see where he's at -- can he change directions, how much can he do?"

Higgins has thrown 96 career touchdown passes, tied with Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols (2006-09) and Montana's Dave Dickenson (1992-95).

Higgins also needs 286 passing yards to top former Wildcats standout Jamie Martin as the school's career leader in that category. Higgins is currently third and Martin is second behind Nichols in conference history.

"We've got (Higgins) in a brace already, so we'll kind of play it by ear right now," McBride said. "We're not going to do anything that will affect this kid negatively. If we don't feel he's in a good enough position to play, we won't play him. He's definitely at this point not ruled out."

Weber State (5-4, 4-3 Big Sky) is out of the conference title chase and the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs picture.

Offensive tackle Caleb Turner missed time in the Montana State game with a sprained shoulder.

"We'll limit his contact this week so he doesn't take a lot of hitting on the shoulder, but he definitely will be in the starting lineup on Saturday," McBride said.

Roving linebacker Willie Harris (calf) and cornerback David James (ankle) are questionable for the Northern Arizona game.

Weber State may go against the Lumberjacks (5-4, 3-3) without quarterback Cameron Higgins, who suffered a second-degree knee sprain in the final quarter of the 24-10 loss at Bozeman. He completed 22 of 32 passes for 229 yards and no touchdowns before being knocked out of the game on a low tackled. Higgins was tackled low after he had released the football

Sophomore backup quarterback Mike Hoke finished the game.

“Yesterday … Mike took most of the reps,” McBride said. “The doctor has cleared Higgins. If he can handle it, he can play.

“I do know, however, that Mike Hoke is completely capable of stepping in and running this team and his teammates feel the same way.”
