Hoping Joel puts together a good SL game

Well the first two games in the Jazz Summer League have been lack luster for Joel to say the least. He has spent a good amount of his limited time at the 5. The Jazz' lack of offensive scheming and execution has made it hard for him. Lots of guys running Iso and creating for themselves. Joel is setting high screens in the pick and roll and not getting very many passes out of it. I hope we get to see him play on Simmons tonight. The D-league season ticket rep sought me out the other night, saying that if I wanted to see Joel play next season it would likely be for the Stars. FYI, season tickets start at $78 for 25 home games. I am still holding out hope he can make the Jazz roster. Here's to Joel having a monster game tonight and next week in Vegas!

Getting NOTHING out of the pick-n-roll and the entire JAZZ Summer League seems to be about trying to make a superstar point-forward out of Lyles. Joel certainly didn't help his cause starting out about 0-5 FT, 0-2 FG, 0-1 3PT on one ugly shot. Still, it would be nice to see him get a fair look that matches his skill set. The JAZZ game plan has looked like limited defensive effort and for Lyles to take 90% of the shots while on the floor, no matter the look.

I agree. Lyles is in there to Jack up shots. Lyles didn't play tonight and Joel got the start and had the 2nd most min. Started very slow missing some wide open looks. I only saw him make one jump shot, on a nice step back, the rest were dunks. Had a very nice second half finished with a double double 13 points 11 boards and 2 assist. Left a load of points out there but if he can do that every night he will have a great chance. Go get em Joel.

Joel's play with the Jazz summer team in SLC reminded me a lot of his play as a freshman and sophomore. He seemed tentative in the flow of the offense. He is so young to the game that he needs a while to feel comfortable in a new system. Once he stops thinking about every little thing and just gets down to playing basketball, he is able to show his abilities. Sometimes, he worries too much about making mistakes and when he does his abilities are not shown well. The more he plays in the jazz system, the more he will be able to show. Yesterday was a prime example. I think we will begin to see the Joel we all know, now that he is getting more minutes. I believe that the Jazz will stick with him and help him get to where he can help them.

There is no "system" with the Jazz SL, unless you consider "Lyles touches the ball; Lyles shoots the ball" a system. It's no wonder Lyles sits for the NO game and there is signs of life from Joel. He seemed more lost in the offense than tentative to me, and by lost I mean he's working hard for a PnR or looking for an entry pass for a post move but not getting it much ever from players looking at more of an iso game. Joel's never been a great jump-shooter; his form is awkward at best. If that's what the Jazz want, the odds are stacked against him. If they can add some PnR and post looks for the hard-working, athletic PF, then there's some hope and more options in the Jazz repertoire. :twocents:

Jazz vs portland

Lyles playes 33 min.

Joel plays 14. He did turn in a nice stat line tho. 4 points (2-5), 3 assists, 4 reb 2 steals and a turnover. Not bad considering no minutes.

He does look lost and very tenative. Got the ball at the high post, no one around and he looks to pass. Finally he just shoots it. He was wide open but he looks as if he has lost his confidence in his jumper. But hasnt lost that dunking ability! A year in the D league will do wonders for him.

Nice game by Joel last night. I'm starting to think he is a better player than Lyles, mostly because he is excelling with time as a rookie and Lyles has a season under his belt. When he starts, the Jazz win. When Lyles starts they lose. He is far more orientated to team play and being a teammate than most of the other guys on the floor.

On another note, Davion Berry is playing for Toronto. Not getting a lot of mins and not scoring a lot, but he is running the offense for the Raptors well when he gets time.

Joel led the Jazz to a Las Vegas Summer League victory against the Lakers.
Great Line!!! Just over 29 minutes. 20 points (team high) on 9/12 from floor (1/1 from 3 point land.) 6 boards, 1 blocked shot, Zero turnovers and Zero fouls.

Here is the game. Campbell and Anthony really talk well about Joel.

For Joel's sake, I hope the Jazz brass have been paying attention to the glaring obvious, but I have my doubts. When they showcase Lyles, yes, he scores points and the rest of the players don't get a fair look, nor is the Jazz very competitive. Did they win a single game with Trey playing? With Joel starting and playing as a teammate, what were they? 3-1? It seemed like he and Paige started looking for each other and working together after Lyles wasn't consuming the offense. Joel still has much to figure out and improve on but I really believe he has something to offer the Jazz and/or NBA.

Nice writeup in the Des:

"I’m a great rebounder. I’m an elite rebounder, so anything that comes off the rim I use my athleticism and my length to go get the ball. I’m able to set screens and roll to the basket. I’m able to knock down shots whether they’re midrange or threes. I could do a little bit of everything. I can also attack my defender off the bounce and create for my teammates.”

Is that a real quote by our Joel? Ha! Brimming with confidence right now. I love it.

It really has been fun to watch Joel grow and develop, both as a player and a man, over the past 5 years. I watched him play and interact while on his recruiting visit. To see him now it truly is amazing how far he has come. I'm grateful that we all got to see it first hand. He still has up side as well, and we may still get to see it here in Utah.
