“The Sacramento State women and the Weber State men have captured the 2009-10 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophies.
Sacramento State has claimed the women’s All-Sports Trophy three consecutive seasons. The Hornets capped a great season by winning the Big Sky outdoor track and field championship last weekend in Ogden, Utah.
Sacramento State finished with 88 total points, for an average of 11 points per sport. The University of Montana was second with an average of 9.50, followed by Eastern Washington at 9.43.
Points are determined based on team finishes in the regular-season standings for soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball and football. Points are awarded based on finish at the Big Sky Championship in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf.
Sacramento State’s season was highlighted by championships in indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis. The Sacramento State tennis team has won nine straight Big Sky Championships. The Hornets also finished second in golf, and had a surprising tie for second place in women’s basketball.
Weber State’s men picked up a record 16th Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy, and its second straight.
The Wildcats earned 79.5 points in the six sports for an average of 13.25 points per sport. Northern Arizona was second at 11.25, and Montana was third at 10.75.
Weber State capped the 2009-10 season with a victory on its home track in the Big Sky outdoor track and field championship last week. Weber State also won the men’s regular-season basketball championship, and tied for second in football and tennis.
In July, the Big Sky Conference will announce the winner of the 2009-10 Sterling Savings Bank Presidents’ Cup. The Presidents’ Cup is an annual award that recognizes a combination of academic and athletic achievement of student-athletes. Academic criteria includes individual grade point averages, graduation rates and number of All-Conference performers with grade point averages above 3.0.
The University of Montana led the Presidents’ Cup race following the winter semester.”
