Hornets Earn 4th Seed in FCS Playoffs; Will Face UCD/SDST Winner at Home

You read it correctly.

Our Hornets earned the 4th seed in the upcoming postseason tournament and will host a 2nd round matchup.

It’s possible they could face their Causeway foe again, should UCD upset the Jackrabbits in South Dakota this Saturday. SAC ST will face the winner of that 1st round game at Hornet Stadium on December 4th at 6pm.

What do you guys think?

I think the committee seeded fairly. I’m just glad no other Big Sky team was gifted a higher seed than the Hornets, as I’d seen predicted by some. That would have pissed me off.

If they keep winning, the Hornets are guaranteed home field until the Semi-Finals, where they’d conceivably face Sam Houston State.

Let’s all hope for deep postseason run!

SD, can you riddle me how UNI got an at large birth with a 6-5 record???

I thought you had to have 7 FCS wins or something close to that.

I know they had a couple nice wins over SAC and SDST, but still. No chance 6-5 should be good enough to get in. That’s ridiculous,

I would love to Davis go on the road and upset South Dakota state, and then have a playoff Causeway at our place. I think we are in a favorable position. as I would not want to be in the James Madison or North Dakota State sides of the bracket

Pains me to say this but there’s a chance we might not make it out of the first game. South Dakota State (not seeded) is the third favorite to win the whole thing by ESPN computers. They were a last-second unlucky Hail Mary in a rivalry game away from being highly seeded. Besides Montana (EWU-UNI), the committee really shoves one up our behinds. SDSU was the runner-up in Spring too, don’t forget with an FBS win this fall. I’m still picking us because I’m banking on Taylor learning his lessons from 2019 about the bye week.

If we get Davis (I know we’ve done it once before), it’s really really difficult to beat any team twice in 3 weeks. Especially a rival. Especially in football.

If we get past the Semis, we’re definitely on the easy side of the bracket. Villanova has a cupcake of a first round. The AQ from two weak conferences. And I personally don't think Sam Houston is that good. MO State or Montana State has a very realistic chance of taking them down.

Yeah, the UM fans are whining and complaining about being on that side of the bracket.

Somebody has to be in the tougher bracket.

And that’s why all games matter to place yourself in the best position possible.

I think most avid followers know how good SDST has been over the years and that they are very formidable this season.

Honestly, considering history, I’d think we’ll likely be the underdog in that hypothetical matchup despite being seeded #4.

I agree we’d be underdog vs SDSU, but the staff has already scouted Davis, so hopefully this extra time will allow for a thorough scout if SDSU as a potential opponent.

Who knows, west coast, night game - might throw off SDSU. It didn’t for AP though. But that reminds me, pay for dry weather or we’ll just get murdered by the SDSU run game.

Yeah, well, AP wasn’t playing that game w/o their top 2 offensive weapons and their MVP QB hampered. Had they been, they don’t score 42.

If SDST comes to Hornet Stadium minus their best RB and best WR and with a less than healthy QB I really like the Hornets chances — West Coast night game or not. ;)

If Sac State enters their playoff game this year under the same circumstances as 2019, forget SDST — even Davis can surely beat them.

Luckily our 2 QB’s don’t seem to be experiencing lingering issues and other than Perkinson our backs are in good health. We just need Pierre Williams to heal up quickly.

The defense seem to be in pretty good shape too.

Far too early to know what the weather will be like in 13 days, but more than likely in the 50’s and fairly clear. Hopefully no fog.

I'm no braketologist but I made the "7 D1 minimum" on another board and someone piped in that that requirement/guideline was dropped a few years back. UNI getting in tells me they really valued that early road win against us and that close loss to a then ranked Iowa. Other than that I got nothing. They did beat SDSU on the road and SIU at home and being in a power conderence certainly helped.

After all that, their reward is to play a damn good EWU team on the maxipad. Meh.

Looking at the entire bracket, our side is the "easier" side. But SDSU is a damn good team and was a botched hail mary defense to South Dakota from being a seed. I don't see a downtrodden dungpiler team hitting the road and playing in an outdoor stadium in Brookings in late November and stealing a win. Hornet coaches should prep for SDSU.

Check Dave Lewis podcast, He is talking with Joe Davidson from Sac Bee. First part is Kings, but mostly about Sac Football.

Yeah, most of the pollsters, including HERO (they had us crazily high even as the Coaches Poll was screwing us all year), have us losing to SDSU. While the point made above about SDSU having some injury issues that Austin Peay didn't have a couple of years ago is valid, what the pollsters fail to realize is that, having been through that kind of pain once, I can hardly see Coach Taylor allowing the Hornets to go through it again. We will AT LEAST get past SDSU (or the Manure Pile), and I could see us very easily going to Frisco....

Nothing about winning in the playoffs is "very easy". Enough nonsense already.

That said, I just looked it up. The last time we had Causeway 2.0, we won BOTH versions, and the playoff version was a 35-14 beatdown. Of course, that was the D-II playoffs, but if it happened in 1988, it can happen again....

Is it too soon to start the SDSU/SAC game thread?

I had a premonition last night, and woke up in a cold sweat - the game was in the balance and the Hornets were inside the 5 against SDSU, and we ran that pass play that usually gets dumped off to Marshall Martin running to the right pylon, but this time, it was a pump fake to him and and popped right over the middle to Charlie McBride for a score.

Lots of “minor” offensive holding not being called on South Dakota State against Davis so far. Which worries me. They’re breaking out for big runs because of it

The SDSU supporters are already underestimating us.
