Hornets @ Utah Valley

It’s time to focus on the next game at Utah Valley. UVU knocked off Oregon State (who hasn’t  ) and will probably be coming in on a wave of momentum. It looks like their two guards, Williams and Swarbrick are the heart and soul of this team. They are averaging 13.3 and 12.3 ppg, respectively. Both had a huge night in Corvallis and I hope Katz has some kind of a plan to slow at least one of these guys down. UVU also has Robinson (F) who is averaging 10.5 ppg and their big man Aird (C) is averaging 9.2 ppg. Their numbers are inflated as they have played 2 non-D1 games but it looks like UVU is capable of having a well balanced attack.

I think this game is winnable IF Katz can prevent the Hornets from falling into a hole early. Those early runs have killed this team. Secondly the Hornets will have to make shots and execute on the offensive side. Hopefully the blowout loss to Wazzu has motivated this team to play better. Aird is a freshman with height so I’d like to see Katz work the ball into the paint with Alpha (if healthy) and see if they can take advantage of the inexperienced center.

Lets hope we can shake off that horrendous Washington State game and re-enter the Win column. This is going to be a big test for the Hornets.

The Hornets are down 47 to 31 at halftime. They've hit quite a few 3's. At times Sac St looked good on "D", but other times we've let them do what they want. They've had a couple big runs on us that really put us in a hole. Also, we've missed six free's, only 3 for 9; not good.

N'Diaye isn't playing again which doesn't help. We'll need him for conference play more than non, so let him get healthy. Coach must like Zach Nelson, but I don't see it. He's got the size, but is not a good shooter and makes too many mistakes. Maybe he's a good practice player, I don't know. I'd keep him on the bench more.

They've got three players from our area and two are killing us. Swarbrick from El Dorado with 10 and Baker from Sacto (Natomas?) with 9.

Lost 77 to 52 to Utah Valley. It looked like we gave up fairly early in the 2nd half. We usually don't do that even if we are getting slaughtered. Their announcers said it looked like Sat St was "tired". Maybe that was it. Sac St is now 2 and 29 in the state of Utah. Maybe it's the altitude.

Coach started Hoffman and Jackson for a first in the 2nd half, but Utah Valley went on another early run and it was over for certain then. The coach's son, Hunsaker, a freshman guard poured in 23 and several uncontested 3's. They outrebounded us by ten in the first half.

I was hoping we could get six conference wins this season; now I"m beginning to wonder. We really looked disjointed. I don't think coach knows who to play or can't find a group that can play well together. We've got about 3 weeks to figure that out. We should do better at Loyola on Tuesday; I'm hoping.

Wow what an embarrassing loss to a weak opponent. It seems like everyone struggles until they play this program. Katz needs to get it together, he just doesn’t know how to have this team ready to play a game and hasn't for some time now.

OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley opened the game on a 22-8 run, and led the entire way while posting a 77-52 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday evening at the UCCU Center.
Sacramento State got within six points (31-25) after a jumper from John Dickson at the 6:09 mark of the first half, but Utah Valley quickly responded with a 12-1 run to take a commanding 43-26 lead. The Hornets got no closer than 13 points the rest of the evening as Utah Valley had at least a 20-point lead the final 16:39 of the contest.

if its any consolation, UVU did beat Oregon State last Wednesday.

I'm guessing the novelty of having Obama's brother-in-law as their coach is starting to wear off in Corvallis! He might be adding to the unemployment numbers real soon. They play an incredibly weak OOC, and are still only 3-4.

They've got a really nice on campus baseball and basketball facility:

2500 in attendance at our game (8500 seats). I don't know how you overcome the psychological part of the game when you go on the road and see a real facility, a real crowd and a real college atmosphere. I just wonder what goes through our guys minds and whether or not it has an affect on their play. There has to be a reason we are not competitive on the road.

Even more so, how do these other schools seem to pull it off and we're confined to this old gym. It's demoralizing.

Facilities are certainly no excuse for losing. That's not where I'm going. But there is a psychological part to sports and athletic competition and I just wonder...

Are you saying the Hornet Gym isn't a 1st class basketball facility? Blasphemy!

Dont feel too bad about losing to Utah Valley, its a tough place for anybody to win at, no Big Sky team has ever beaten the Wolverines in thier arena.

Weber is 0-2 at UVU, and also got blown out both times

71-58 in 2005, and 68-49 in 2006.

They would be a great basketball only team (with interest in creating football) to add to the Big Sky. and get to an even 12 teams in hoops

I say sign em' up, especially if they have football aspirations. A two division Big Sky can only help our travel situation. It looks like we are going to stay full members of the Big Sky, so lets strengthen it.
