How much would you pay?

When we look at salaries compared to team performance past and present. what coaches are worth their money. I think BJ Hill is by far the biggest bargain. Murphy got paid too much out of the gate. The numbers suggest that we may not be getting in the best ROI in Randy. But we love him and that's what it takes to keep him. The old saying is mostly true that you get what you pay for. Just ask North Dakota, he makes a fourth of Randy's Salary and coaches like it too.

I found these numbers on this blog: http://www.mylosingseason.net/2012/10/coaching-salaries.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I think they are about a year old. Some of these guys probably got raises last year.

Randy Rahe Weber State $352,156 - Needs a few more tournament appearances to warrant being paid 3 times as much as some of his counter parts in the Big Sky.
Jack Murphy Northern Arizona $180,000 Over paid by 60,000
BJ Hill Northern Colorado $105,000 Way Under Paid
Wayne Tinkle Montana $127,308 Under Paid
Brad Huse Montana State $113,824 Over paid by a little
Tyler Geving Portland State $120,000 Over paid by a little
Nick Robinson Southern Utah - Unknown Good thing he doesn't get paid by the win.
Jim Hanford Eastern Washington $90,000 Under paid
Brian Katz Sacramento State $90,000 About right
Bill Evans Idaho State $90,000 Significantly Under paid
Brian Jones North Dakota $86,384 He is the clearance priced coach in the league. No wonder he is the worst coach in the Big Sky.

Wow, I knew he made more but not 3x more. Which makes our recent short comings a little more disheartening. Surprised Tinkle hasnt gotten more of a raise for his runs.

These numbers are always questionable. First there is the issue of whether we are comparing apples and oranges. Rahe's 352K (up to 382K now I think) includes benefits and bonuses. Tinkle's does not. If you look at the link to the USA Today article you see that the 127K for Tinkle is salary. It does not include benefits like health insurance, life insurance, contributions to a retirement account, etc. Which might add another 30-40K. Second, according to the USA Today article Tinkle could have earned another 135K in bonuses last year, bringing his total to somewhere around 300K.
Furthermore, how can we determine if Rahe is overpaid? Remember, it's not just wins that matter here, but attendance figures, and other things associated with the program. Averaging 6600 per game last year counts for something. According to the attendance figures posted on this website 6600 was the 15th highest in the West last year. Not exactly sure what "the West" covers here, but I'm pretty sure Rahe's salary is not in the top 15 in the West.

With bonus Tinkle made 187,000 last year according to the article I read. Randy's is pretty much garunteed from what I have read. Some of it is privately sourced but it is still guaranteed.

It has been "published" that $90K is paid each June, "IF" Rahe is still the head coach...not sure if it is privately sourced, but it was entered into his contract a few years ago when the effort was there to entice him to not leave for Boise St or Colorado St at the time or a bit later. I would bet that Tinkle makes more than that given figure because Montana has a TV contract coaches show. The numbers are always fluid. :twocents:

I disagree completely with comparing weber's coaching salaries being justified compared to other big sky schools. We do not care what the big sky teams are paying. If we did we would hire a lesser coach for 100k and be on par.

We consider ourselves the best program and want to be better than the sky. Even our women's pay more than most men's. Our attendance average last yr was almost a sell or more at all the other big sky "arenas". Weber is showing they care to keep the program going upward not downward. Notice all the upgrades as well as coaching pay increases.

I would argue rahe is still underpaid. Not over. Should a coach whose home court is the Dee be making the same as one who claims the hornests nest or the stott center?

Even with his pay, the attendance average...weber state, ogden and the students, cringe, the students....none are deserving of our program. Note I didn't dis the tkt paying regulars.

Rose has a guaranteed entry to heaven in his contract. How do you put a price tag on that. Then there is the waiver on his donations to God. That alone increases his take home by 10%. :notworthy: :notworthy:

Some of the names have changed. Some of the salaries have gone up, but I really think that we are not getting our money worth.

Anyone know how much Pope is getting paid at UVU?

Evans makes a base salary of $105,000 + a $20,000 annual media payment (never quite figured out what that is). There are lots of incentives as well, which we haven't had to worry about for a while.

From the Des News: "Pope signed a five-year contract with UVU just prior to the press conference and will be paid around $175,000 annually."

UVU doesn't have to worry about football. Yes, they have a DI soccer team, that would be awesome here...not going to happen in a million years, but their #1 chance for growth, respect, and revenue is their basketball team. They are going to put lots of money and interest into it. It will grow, because they are determined to see it grow. Weber...well, we are determined to do JUST ENOUGH.
