How Times Have Changed

Anybody besides me get all warm and fuzzy when they heard EWU had pro scouts from 17 different teams at our pro day and Wazzu had scouts from 9?!

Time to strike while the iron is hot! The BOT needs to capitalize on the success of the football team and run the Gateway project through. I hope they realize they have something special happening right now and something like the Gateway helps not only the football program but the university as a whole.

Good observation Dozy. Along that train of thought, did Montana even have a pro day?

There were more people on the field at Pro Day than there were in the stands for a regular season game 10 years ago.

Montana has a pro day today. It's for the whole state so UM, MSU, Carroll, etc., will be there. Expect zero to one pro scout to be there... :)

Couldn't agree more, I also thought it was great to see the current players support these guys. I saw Vernon Adams in the KHQ broadcast helping shag balls for Padron. The pictures that the athletic department posted had a lot of players there in support.

Thought it was great that Tuel and Wilson from WSU wanted to participate in EWU's pro day, too bad the NCAA didn't allow it. WSU isn't allowing Wilson to participate in theirs and Tuel wanted to throw to some great WR's. I heard that some of the receivers went down to WSU's yesterday to catch for Tuel, anyone hear who went or how it went?

I think the Bobcats probably have a player or 2 that could play in the NFL, not sure about the Griz seniors from last year that have a shot?

EDIT - just saw that there are 3 scouts in Missoula today.

There is so much good happening right now and I'm happy for those of you who have been around for more than a few years because you remember what it was like. There is still a ways to go, but I'm looking forward to seeing the facilities when they are done. And I have a lot of faith in the people working on this and believe they will get it done.

We all want plans to proceed quickly, but they are going forward with caution. This is the biggest single fundraising activity ever attempted at EWU and given the history between the academic and athletic sides of the university, I'm sure there are some people waiting for a mistake to pounce on. Our people are crossing the t's and dotting the i's, so to speak, and double (or triple) checking their work to make sure everything is right.

The last update I had is something that has been partially discussed already in this forum. A big donor is being sought to cover the final design, but also I believe some engineering needs to be done regarding the size of the project and the ground on which they will be building. You might remember that there were some issues with the field being built over a natural spring that caused the turf project to cost more than expected. Now we are building a huge structure on that site, so I'm sure there will be some difficulties to overcome along the way. Not to mention higher costs...

Once the university has that money then the final design and studies can be done so the Foundation Board and Board of Trustees can look at the proposal and make their decision. It wouldn't surprise me if it was fall before all this happens. I know other donors have been identified and would be surprised if some have not pledged funds once the plans are approved.

Jeff had a good day, putting up a 4.5 40. The only QB faster in the last two years was RGIII at last year's combine (4.5 ties the time Russel Wilson put up last year also). MQW wasn't allowed to work out due to the burned bridges he left at WSU. Kaufman and I think Herd and Edwards made the trip down to run routes. Not sure why they let our guys work out in Pullman but not the reverse, no big deal. Wazzu also had an OL jump 38" in the vert and a reserve LB put up 39 on bench.

Great post! Thanks for the insight, Larry.

Almost nine months ago when I was discussing the upcoming game against Wazzu on their forum, I remember 99% of their fans getting real upset when I suggested that EWU had a better receiving corps and that I would take Kaufman over any of their WRs. Lots of proclamations that Wilson would be a 1st or 2nd rounder.

WSU fans (and I am one) were delusional about Wilson's talent. They thought he was much better than he really was because he'd always make All Pac-10 teams in almost every publication. The reason he was getting those is simply because those publications wanted a WSU representative and no one else had the talent. I strongly suspect WSU will improve a lot over the next couple of years. Pretty much every guy on their roster was either talent-deficient or low-character. Similar to what Akey was doing at Idaho this year, the previous staff was scrambling to save their jobs and trying to make it with kids nobody else wanted due to being problems off the field.
