How to Beat Arizona: Almost Guaranteed

OK I just talked to Coach Howland about how to beat Arizona and he almost guaranteed this would work especially for us. (And we all know Coach Howland knows about winning in the tournament and his love for Weber State.) As a former HS coach myself, I think this will work and somebody needs to relay this to Coach Rahe as a possible strategy.

Arizona is one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the country, especially when there is pressure on them. That is mainly why they lost to UCLA by choking at the line. If you foul anyone other than Nick Johnson or Kaleb Tarczewski, and get them on the free throw line, they will most likely miss the front end of a 1 and 1 or miss 1 of the 2 in a bonus.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...ort/freeThrowPct/order/false/arizona-wildcats

We rank 20th in 3pt shooting at nearly 40% and Arizona's 3pt defense is pretty good but their strength is really defending the interior with their bigs and getting easy rebounds. So we can eliminate that strength by having a chance at the long rebounds and good shots at the 3 by setting good picks. This is what UCLA did on their 3 to win it with a perfect pick by their big man so the shooter is square with his feet. Coach Howland's NAU teams were similar with great 3pt shooters by the way and that's what they did to beat the higher ranked teams.

So imagine this scenario...

We immediately begin fouling by using a designated fouler who constantly targets guys like Gordon, Jefferson and McConnell. It will immediately get in their heads that our strategy is to make them shoot from the line and put pressure on them big time. It will lead to about a 50% average meaning 1 point or less per possession due to some being missed during the 1 and 1s as long as we take care of the boards on these attempts. Of course we can't do it every possession either because we don't have enough players to foul so many times and some possessions, they'll get the board or fast breaks off turnovers etc. so it will increase their point per possession slightly above 1. But the other key will be that their flow will be interrupted and cause bad shots on their side and this is what happened in all of their losses.

Let's say we take 90% of our shots from 3 and average 40% on these. Arizona only averages about 67 possessions per game and the same for us so if they only average let's say 1.1 per possession then that is about 74 points. We will take 60 3s and make 24 and we still have 7 more possessions where we make 1s or 2s at 40% and above which means we will score about 77 points total. If this strategy speeds up the game and there are more possessions, then our margin increases, so even better.

Of course, a game will take many turns and other factors will add or subtract a few points from the point totals. However, as Coach Howland says, the best way to beat a good team which is favored by double digits is to utilize our strength and expose their weakness. And this will be the best way to do it and give our team a fairly good chance to win on Friday afternoon.

If we play them straight up, we have absolutely NO CHANCE imho. So why not give this strategy a try? Plus imagine if we did a Villanova (a la 1985) and shot lights out. It would be a blowout and shock the world! :twocents:

Interesting thought, it probably has as good a shot as anything, but would be the ugliest game of the tourney and could easily backfire.

I'm pretty sure Coach Rahe won't be taking any coaching philosophy from fan forum members...

 It's probably too late to change anything. The team has finally found their form and they're having fun. We should just enjoy watching the game, keep cheering for them, and hope that Weber can be the miracle when we play our game.

It would be awesome to win. I've been hopeful for weber to win in the past but we were never a 16. It would be more fun though if its not like 2007 when ucla smoked us like Pocatater Bengal beef.

In 2007 UCLA was the best 2 seed in the field and I thought that most of us felt like we were a 16 seed that year. Kevin Love was a beast and our guard play was not even close to where it is this year. I like our chances better in this match up than in 2007.

I like the idea of changing the game plan a bit. Certainly play a high risk high reward type of play with plenty of outside shots from both teams. It needs to be one of those games with a crazy flow to it. We shouldn't intentionally foul but we should play extremely aggressive defense against the right players at the right time. Hopefully the officials don't want to call 20 fouls on us in the first half so we can establish a defensive pressure advantage and still send them to the line a bunch. I wouldn't mind seeing big James put a guy to the floor early in the game, (with the body of course) just it put a little fear in them.

It's fun to speculate, but I'm sure our coaches will put us in the best chance to win. I can't wait to see Bolomboy square off against Gordon.

Hmm, no commentary from U of Arizona fans yet?

I attend U of A - NAU games each year in Tucson and generally have decent interactions with their fans other than the random drunken fraternity "bro" or townie talking smack after the Wildcats beat NAU by 20. They're a passionate fanbase that travels well. Their "lifer" fans remember what reality was like before Lute Olson turned the program into a juggernaut. Their younger fans have never been given any comeuppance and can come off acting like their shiznit stinks not.

Could this be the year a 1 seed is taken down by a 16, Weber fans? Common sense says no but the fact that there is a chance is the exact reason why I watch the next four days of college basketball.

For those of you attending the tourney, soak it all in. I saw NAU lose in the last seconds vs. St Johns @ the 2000 (or 2001) opening round in Tucson. I also saw Gonzaga beat U Florida and lose in the final seconds to lousy, stinking U Conn in Phoenix in 1999. An NCAA tourney game is the only time in life I have ever developed a cough for a work shift. I regret nothing.

I usually pull for ASU and UofA over most other schools due to friends and family and regional pride/support but I'm in Weber's corner this week.

MT JACK!! You are the man!! :thumb:

Look for the biggest upset of all time to happen on Friday in San Diego. Weber State will win.

I do like the ideas of HC..

Many pundits are raising the question, is this the year a 16 beats a 1? I believe we have as good of shot as any.

On the radio (1280 thezone) today they had a guest talking about computer simulations he said that WSU is the 2nd highest % chance to upset a #1 seed ever. The computer numbers say WSU has a 13% chance to beat Arizona. The highest ever was 16% a few years ago, it ended up that Syracuse won by 7 against UNC-Asheville but it was a 3 pt game with minutes left...
