I’m Liking Spring Football

As a Weber State and FCS football fan I’ve really been enjoying the spring football season and watched some great quarterfinal games over the weekend (although I wish Weber had been there). I see many advantages to seeing a spring season permanently adopted, including:
--Puts FCS in the spotlight and not in the shadow of FBS
--And with that, better and more focused TV and sports media coverage
--Fills a natural sports void after the FBS bowls, the Super Bowl and before MLB really gets going
--Maybe some weather advantages making it more comfortable for fans
--The season coincides better with students actually being on campus
Why not set FCS football apart from the “big boys” and put FCS football in the national spotlight with spring football on a permanent basis?

Dave Fox, the anchor for the KJZZ telecast of Weber State's home games this spring said the very same positive points along with the crew. Some pluses, but also negatives I'm sure. I would say Yay. :thumb:

Other viewpoints??? Yay's/Nay's ??...see which side gets the nod :ugeek:

PS: Great game last night between Southern Illinois vs. So Dakota St...the Jackrabbits pulled out a win by intercepting So Illinois QB's last ditch pass attempt on a winning touchdown drive.

Regrettably, I don't see the NCAA moving FCS to the spring. I really enjoyed the spring season, but it was definitely an aberration. However, why not allow teams to play two or three games each spring? Women's soccer and Volleyball, both Fall sports, usually, play a couple of games/tournaments in the spring. While both golf/tennis play all year. YES, I know it is super expensive moving a football team compared with the golf team, which might be the biggest reason against playing actual teams, but in the end, I really liked the Montana model (playing the full spring was superior in my opinion). They played two games (PSU and CWU) and it made the spring more competitive for the football programs. What do you actual get from beating the crap out of each other for a month and a half, concluding the "Spring Session" with a scrimmage? It would be more fun playing another conference rival or a team like Ft. Lewis (DII). You could actually measure the spring session against real competition. At the very least, it is something athletics could make some money off of.

I think the quarterfinals showed that there is no clear team a level above. Hopefully, Weber State will have the experience in Fall to put games away. They didn’t seem to make any progress throughout the season, so not sure it is going to happen just because they played the Spring. They could go as high as 9-2 and be as low as 6-5, so they will have to sharpen their game because parity has never been as high.

As for Spring or Fall, I am a Fall person. It’s just football weather and what I am used to. The FBS is such a joke and dog and pony show, that I don’t pay that much attention to it.

I don’t think there was a great deal of more coverage for playing in the Spring. Honestly, I don’t really care if there was. The football was awesome. I’d pick these games over watching a vast majority of FBS games. That being the case…football belongs in the Fall.

The good thing this year is football is just around the corner.
