I have a Question.

Can anyone please explain to me why the coaching staff burned the red shirt year of Juwan Williams? I just don't understand that decision. He has played 91 total minutes and has only appeared in 12 games. Seems to me like it was a total knee jerk reaction to when Ryan Richardson was playing so poorly. Hopefully someone who is much smarter than I am can enlighten me on this.
Also wasn't Jeremiah Jefferson supposed to be awesome? I would like to see him get some minutes to see what he can do. It's not like the current rotation is setting the world on fire especially on offense. :twocents:

Williams was un-redshirted because of Stavrev. Even though he is not a 4 he is the closest thing the Cats have to a 4, after the big 3 of Bolomboy, Braxton, and Hill. I guess they could have pulled Dallas's redshirt, but I think that would have been a worse option.

If im not mistaken, Williams was pulled off of his red shirt way before Kiko broke his leg. Im pretty sure they both played against Antelope Valley U. In fact they both played against Pacific Union on December 1st as well.

I didn't say it was because of Stavrev's injury. Williams' minutes have almost all been at the 4. After Weber got back from SDSU and Williams's redshirt was pulled, he took Stavrev's place as the "4th big" getting minutes when two of the big 3 were in foul trouble.
Larry, your initial post said pulling Williams's redshirt when Richardson was playing poorly was a total knee jerk reaction. I was suggesting that in Williams' case it wasn't Richardson's play that led to Williams' redshirt being pulled, but Stavrev's play. Williams didn't get any of Richardson's minutes when Richardson was pulled from the starting line-up and relegated to the bench during the trip to Florida, those minutes were taken up by Cannon moving into the starting rotation and John being the 2nd guard (along with Gittens) off the bench. Remember, the season started with Senglin, Baker, and Richardson starting in the guard positions and Gittens and Cannon coming off the bench.

In my humble opinion, no matter who Williams came in for and got minutes from, it was still a pretty dumb decision to burn his redshirt and then never play the kid. :thumb:

Looking at how things have progressed to this point in the season, I can see why this question might be asked. Williams is the 3 man of the future for us. At the time of the decision he was slated to help us at that position, where we needed help. A few games later, Kiko went down and they were not sure if we could get by with just three post players. So far, our three post players and the committee that holds down the wing positions have held together. Hind sight is always 20/20 and it now appears that the red shirt year may have been a good option. However, that is only if there are no more injuries. He could turn out to be a key guy at some point down the stretch. :twocents:

It was great to see Juwaun Williams get some minutes Saturday night, it's as if the Coaches read my original post on this thread and said "by damn, Larry is right!" :-D

As good as he looked Saturday night, he is going to get a lot better as time goes on. He is just a pup. With his frame and athletic ability, the sky is the limit. He is a great young man and seems to be very coachable. I've been to several practices and I've seen him improve steadily. My opinion is that he has a bright future with WSU basketball.

I agree that Williams has a bright future. His size and ability to rebound and score around the basket is something neither Richardson, Gittens, or Baker really have this year. Looking ahead to next year, it will be interesting to see what shakes out with Williams in the mix as a 3, since no one (starters or reserves) at the 1, 2, or 3, will be graduating.

It is starting to look more and more likely that Gittens is the odd man out. I hate to say it because he is a fan and personal favorite, but what does he do better than the rest? Last year, he was the defensive corner stone, now, he looks lost a lot of times on D. He has a pretty good shot and can drive, but Ryan is a better outside shooter, Baker the better offensive facilitator and is more controlled, and Williams can rebound and play around the basket. As of right now, Williams can shot better for range than Williams, unless he can improve his shooting...if so, he might be able to push his way into the starting rotation. Nice thing about Gittens, is that he can also play the 2 if needed.
