Idaho and NMSU get the boot from Sun Belt

"Staben added that Idaho will now evaluate whether to play an independent schedule or accept an invitation from the FCS Big Sky Conference for the fall 2018 season."

Wow, this shocks me. I guess it makes sense for the Sun Belt to feel this way. I hate the idea of part time members in a conference; I'd like the Big Sky to draw the line and say you either join in all sports or leave with all of your other sports but football. I never liked the conference acted as a soft landing spot for them. Frankly, I don't like UC Davis and Cal Poly being football only, either. You either are, or are not, a Big Sky Conference team. Same goes for Hartford and Binghampton--- in those incredibly rare cases where people consider them members of the Big Sky. (Talk about not meeting a conferences' geography, why are these two schools members?)

Their forum is emotional right now. Many of the fans are anticipating in another wave of FBS conference realignment and landing in the Mountain West or a newly formed conference. They don't want to settle for the Big Sky.

Exhibit 1A for why I don't want to "move up" anytime in the near future.

Go read their forum if you need a good laugh. They actually think moving back down to FCS will kill their enrollment numbers and give the university a black eye. Are you fucking kidding me?! Oh yeah, I forgot that their student body all enrolled for the thrilling action of Sun Belt football! Fuck these assholes, let them join the GNAC and struggle against CWU.

If UI comes back to the BSC they will have a better Football team/program than they do now...players don't like going to a proven loser...it simply ain't fun (even with a FBS moniker). Is that ironic?

Clawman,
We (Idaho) won 4 games last year. Yes, we are upset. If this was strictly about sports, most would say move to the Big Sky. This has political ramifications for funding in our state. BJC continually tries to take academic programs from the other 4 year schools in the state of Idaho and they use sports to make people believe that good sports programs must mean the school is great too.
Ask any alum of The U of I, ISU, or LCSC, and most will tell you they cannot stand BJC. They constantly try to undermine efforts of other schools even though they are the lowest rated (unless LCSC is lower) school in the state.
We have not had any leadership at from our President for 15+ years. Maybe Staben will change that, and I hope he does. What happened to us just shows that if you do not have good leadership, your organization is screwed.

libertylakevandal;
Sorry, I was looking at the previous years win loss record, you are right and only two wins away from a bowl bid. Not familiar with who BJC is.
Good Luck finding a home

BJC is what Vandals call BSU. The chant was BJC, BSC, BSU, BFD. BJC refers to Boise junior college. They became a 4 year school (BSC) I believe around 1974. Ever since they became a 4 year school there has been fighting for funding. Also, we (U of I) were forced down to the Big Sky around that time by the legislature so we would be in the same league as Boise and ISU. Because we were forced down, we abandoned plans for a basketball arena, put a roof on the football field, and now that is what we are stuck with.

i can understand UI fans being ticked with the current situation. What I don't understand is the knock on the BSC by their fans when there is no viable FBS conference in the region.

It would really suck to be a fan/alumni of Idaho right now and in recent years. I'm not trying to be a jerk either, but they are stuck in a tough position and have been for several years. It's clear they can't compete and be a consistent winner at the FBS level. Their only chance of having success is at the FCS level and in the Big Sky where they belong. In just two years, their men's and women's basketball programs have competed well in this conference, I don't think it would take too long for their football program to do the same.

I understand it would be a tough pill to swallow having to admit failure at the FBS level, but as a fan, I personally think they are already a failure. Why would you want to continue to be a laughing stock when the ability to be relevant is such an easy move away? The bottom line is, Idaho should have never left the conference in the first place. Ever since, they've been trying to keep up with Boise State...and BSU left them in the dust nearly two decades ago. I'm certainly no BSU fan, but at some point, Idaho has to accept reality. Coming back to the Big Sky in football will at the very least give them local relevance and bring back some great local rivalries.

The bottom line is, nobody cares about lower level, losing FBS teams nationally anymore than FCS teams. Arguably, they care less. Do you think more people pay attention and follow North Dakota State or Idaho?

Sounds to me like Bronco envy

Yeah... Laying it on pretty thick.

The Vandal forums mention that BSC has given Staben an ultimatum of May 4th. Good for the Big Sky. UI would fit in very well with our conference, but its never fun to be the rebound. I'm glad our conference is maintaining control.

Furthermore, holy hell I hope they join our conference just to beat the hell out of them every year. Their fans have no respect for ewu on their forums.

I heard Chaves say this yesterday, I believe the date was set a while back but it appears it is still standing.

I don't think I like how massive the Big Sky is. It really makes the conference championship a roller-coaster ride that only occasionally has outright champions. Vandals left and are trash, I'm not even sure why we let them back in partially.

I completely understand the emotions that Vandal faithful must be feeling right now, but I find a lot of the posts to be flat out disrespectful to the Big Sky and specifically to EWU. Idaho is where it is at largely because they have chosen to not make athletics a priority and for what ever reason no president seems to want that job. It isn't the Big Sky's fault, and no matter what disrespect Vandals want to lay at the feet of EWU we are on different trajectories. EWU has been growng across the board in all areas for 20 years and U of I has been stagnant.
