Idaho... Ouch!

I will say with 100% certainty that the Idaho teams that were consistently at or near the top of the Big Sky in the early 90s would have beaten the current incarnation by 3-4 touchdowns every time out.

Idaho is doing what WSU had been doing prior to Leach coming in; they're bringing in kids with all kinds of question marks just to try and become instantly competitive to save their jobs. The problem is those kind of gambles notoriously don't pay off and cause a cancer within the program.

What's worse than all of that, for them, is their utter ineptitude on the sidelines. At one point, they were down in the 4th quarter and had 4th and inches--- knowing that going for it was a forgone conclusion--- and they couldn't figure out what personnel to put on the field and wound up running 30 seconds off the clock AND requiring a timeout. That's inexcusable.

Robb Akey is what most Cougs thought he was when he left Pullman, a good rah-rah guy that doesn't do much else. And let's not even start on Jason Gesser... no experience whatsoever and the results match that resume.

Ouch indeed. They're taking a beating from the press. They're going to be fighting an uphill battle iver the next 2 years for sure, playing as an Indy. This is assuming they can bring in enough FBS teams to play in the dome. I dunno, it's gonna be tough to do. We'll see what happens I guess.

But they have 22 more scholarships! And FBS teams are superior to FCS teams! And there's 3 very talented and experienced guys helping Gesser out! And there's no way their offense can be worse than last year! And...

I read that article over on their forum... most all of the responses reflect a view point of denial.

By the way, Dopa's spot on - just about any of Idaho's teams in the 90's would have drubbed the team we played last Thursday. I really think people underestimate what winning will do for a program, whatever level you're playing at. Idaho had good teams back then because they won. I can only imagine how difficult recruiting is going to be for them this off-season if they wind up having a repeat of 2011 only winning a couple games. No conference, poor facilities by FBS standards, only one or two winning seasons in however long. Really the only thing they've got that could swing someone is the FBS moniker and the fact that it's a decent school academically.

Thanks for posting Dozy. I heard the guys on 700 ESPN talking about the article today, but didn't hear everything they said. My UPS truck is pretty loud. Will be interested to see which teams will come to Moscow next year.

Idaho-Eastern Washington wasn't a David and Goliath matchup circa Michigan-Appalachian State. This was about one team - and in many ways, one conference - dishing a big ol' slice of humble pie to a program that's consistently belittled its former home since leaving nearly two decades ago.
A program that's been told by both Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson and Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson to go away.
A program that has spent a significant amount of time and manpower trying to convince its base that success at the FBS level is not only attainable, it's expected.
A program that by the looks of it, would have trouble competing with Weber State, let alone Montana State.
No, Idaho isn't too good to join the Big Sky, it's that the Big Sky - and EWU in particular - is too good for Idaho.

Yowzer!

can they afford to bring in five fbs teams with no conference?

I don't know, but as it stands right now even with a conference the only teams they can bring in for non-conf are FCS teams.

That article has to be one of my top 20 all time. My sister-in-law went to Idaho and she has been big timing me since they moved up. Boy does she look dumb now!
BTW have not heard from her since the game :-)

To be honest, this is probably the biggest reason why it's hard for me to feel tooo bad for them. I still remember going to the UI/EWU game in '96 and hearing all their dbag fans talking about how they were going to the "big time" and this was the reason their tickets were so damn expensive (at least for a poor college student at the time).

At least back then the arrogance had some merit to it. Now it's just old, baseless, and boring.
