IDAHO STATE

So, UC Davis is solidly in 1st; we have a 2-way tie for 2nd between Weber and EWU; in 4th place is Idaho State; then a 3-way tie for 5th between Montana, Montana State, and PSU? Not bad for a team picked pre-season to be 13th.

Cats and Griz both lost so they both have three losses now. We only have two so that puts us alone in 5th. But, we have a murderous end of schedule (ISU, at Norht Dakota, EWU). Hey, we don't play Davis (until the first round of the playoffs  ).

No break in the schedule. Eleven Sports made us move the time for this game to 7pm which puts us in direct competition with the Ducks (playing Chip Kelly and UCLA at 4:30) and the Beavers (playing USC at 7:30). This is a big game for us and the athletic department needs to hype the crap out of it. Unfortunately, going head to head with both the Ducks and Beavers (and playing in Hillsboro), we may not get the attention this game deserves. But it shouldn't deter us from trying anyway.

We win this except for what seemed to me to be bad offensive calls. When Isom was inserted in the fourth quarter on a third down call, we screamed keeper to the defense. And, of course we didn’t make it. Felt badly for our kicker. Overall, thought play calling was good. Idaho State is a one dimensional team. Will get killed if it makes the playoffs.

If we were in Hail Mary field goal distance the last play, we needed to spike the ball. Probably a mistake our sophomore quarterback will not make again.

Of course, the only reason it was so close down to the wire was the Idaho State player dropping a perfectly thrown pass in the end one. And their quarterback is one hell of a passer.

I agree the use Eason was dumbfounding. If you don't occasionally have him throw the ball you’re setting him up, and you might as well stick with Alexander, who by the way might not be a threat to run off tackle but certainly can move the ball on the ground.

The Viks were on 4th down on the last play and couldn’t spike it to try a field goal. The lost helmet rule in the final minute of the game (losing 10 seconds from the clock) is such a nefarious response from some perceived threat of a team taking advantage of stopping the clock that it makes my blood boil. And how in the hell did we lose so many helmets throughout this game?

Was clock management an issue? We couldn’t reserve a timeout in a close contest like this?

It’s so sad that close only counts in dancing and hand grenades.

I have a feeling that if we didn't get hit with that ten second rule in the final minute, we may be talking about effective clock management had we put the ball in the end zone on that final drive. Initially I was shocked that we weren't in more of a hurry on that final drive, but it seemed that if we did score, we were certainly going to do it and give little or no time to ISU for a final drive of their own. That being said, it sure would have been nice to have a timeout in our pocket.

Speaking of timeouts... I was listening to the pre-game on the radio before the game and for a bit they were saying that ISU would lose a timeout per quarter (total of four) for having the wrong color jerseys. Interesting that it was changed to a 15 yard penalty at the start of each half. Oh, and how do you pack the wrong color jerseys for a road game?

Offensively I thought that we looked pretty good. I do agree that when Eason is in pretty much everyone is expecting the run, and at 2.8 yards per rush last night, ISU was as well. 45 points is usually good for a win, but lets face it, ISU has a great quarterback that picked us apart.

ISU showed at the end of the first half that they certainly don't need a lot of time to score. That offense of theirs can strike from pretty much anywhere.

Undisciplined is what I call it. It is the small details that play into the larger picture. All season long, I have watched our players loose their helmets. Linebacker Sam Bodine probably leads the country in helmets lost for the season.

Strap up your helmet and play football. The coaching staff can’t be your friend and has to hold our players accountable. Loose your helmet for not strapping up properly, sit out a series. Do you think the top coaches in the country would allow their players to continually have their players lids coming of their head? No is the answer!

These small details seem irrelevant, but at the end of the day it can help determine wins and losses.

I just can't help but think lack of urgency hurt PSU's chances. I'm not talking about panicking, I'm talking hustle your butt up to the line and be ready to play. While I was disappointed in the outcome, teams that are going to succeed have to learn to win these games. Alexander showed a little bit of inexperience, and that is expected from a sophomore. I'm sure that the coaches have worked on 2 minute drills, but I hope they not only analyze the team from the game film, but their own coaching. The team just looked unprepared for the final drive.

That final drive reminded me a lot of the final drive at Montana. The final plays there, leading up to Williams' FG try, seemed to show us as being unsure and definitely caused some chaotic moments. No one talks about it because we won. I guess sometimes you win those and sometimes you don't. The ten second runoff seemed to catch Barnum off guard, even though the rule is pretty clear (a person losing his helmet that is not the result of a foul, will have to sit out one play and is subject to a 10-second runoff if it occurs in the last minute of a game). I think how quickly Idaho State marched up the field at the end of the first half made Barnum think that he wasn't going to give them the opportunity to do it again at the end of the game if he could help it. He played for the win or the tie and got neither.

It was embarrassing that we were wearing our home uniforms for the PSU game. But Coach Phenicie heard that PSU was going to have a whiteout -- I think he read it on your website. And he assumed that the Viks would wear their white uniforms. He said that he should have called the football office over there to try to clarify this, but he didn't. Of course Bruce Barnum and Nick Whitworth were both at ISU for quite some time and I got to know them fairly well. And I'm happy for them that they're starting to turn things around this year -- big improvement from last year.
