Idaho

I've watched UI play a couple of times now. Their ball handling is suspect and they are fairly one dimensional on O. They play reasonable D. I don't expect it to be an easy game, but our average game should be enough to get the job done. I would say that losing Linder and losing the one senior guard they had last year, has held them back a little. Also, I've heard that they have had an injury or two. That is never good for a team that was thin to begin with.

I expect that we will win, but I expect a battle out of dem fightin' Vandies. :coffee:

WHO? Are you talking Jeff Linder? If so he was at Boise St, not Idaho. Idaho did NOT have a Linder on their roster last year so Im confused.

Opps. That kills my theory on coaching changes contributing to their poor play. It's hard to believe that the one guard they lost had that much of an effect on their play. There must be something else going on.

I remember the clipboard throwing incident from their head coach. Makes me wonder about internal problems at UI. How do you lose a role playing guard and nothing else, and your team falls apart? :coffee:

They have had some injuries too... their point guard Perion Callandret is out for the year which was a big blow for the vandals. I think they have a post player that's been unable to play also.

Yeesh, feels like forever since we played a home game.

Hope we don't come in rusty, it's been almost two weeks since we played a whole game.

game against the Griz started at 2pm on NYE, a whole week later we play a 5 minute game against ISU now almost another whole week later we get to play again. Hope the kids stayed sharp.

They should be eager to play again. I'm glad we get UI first for a couple of reasons. First, they beat us last year and I'm sure the guys remember. Second, UI is down a little bit. We can have a mediocre night and still come away with a win. I have a feeling that we will be sharp and focused in. Our shooters seem to be in a good place right now. Another positive is that our team is still improving and is not close to peaking yet.

One good thing to come out of this ISU thing is that we don't have any one game weeks left on the schedule. :coffee:

What I love most about playing Idaho is that it is very similar to watching the Purple and White. Both teams know what the other guy is running and so, they know how to defend evolving plays. The Morrill system is running full blast in a Verlin vs. Rahe match up.

Since Randy's first years. We have incorporated a lot of new ideas. Yes, the flash cards are still there, but the plays behind them are mostly new and new things are added each year. Some things are dropped as well. I'm sure that the same thing has happened at UI.

I think we will see some zone from UI tonight and maybe a little pressure. UI is a little one dimensional in their attack, but I don't expect any defensive changes from us. With Sanders, you just have to stay on him and always help when he drives. He is not a real threat to pass.

I think that both teams know each others approach to the game, but the only way they would know the plays is by watching film. You can prepare for what you have seen on film, but most teams throw in little changes each week. Additionally, when plays break down most teams go into an attack that is more free flowing. There is no preparation for that, other than knowing what players generally like to do in that situation.

The familiarity tonight won't come from knowing exactly what they will run, but more from knowing the underlying approach to the game. :coffee:

UI is/was one of the best defensive teams in the BSC. We shot the lights out against them. If we wanted to push it, we probably could have scored over 100. Key players got a lot of rest tonight. That should help us against EWU.

Defensively, we were solid most of the night. We made a few mistakes, but not many. We held Sanders well below his average and gave up very few open threes.

This game was good preparation for EWU. :coffee:

Well that was fun. Rahe likes to talk about the speed at which his team needs to play on offense -- not necessarily shooting right away -- but moving the ball quickly, having players not stand around, etc. They did that very well last night. I thought they handled the various defenses that Idaho through at them quite well.
One thing continues to astound me -- the guards were 3-9 from the foul line. Fortunately, Hill, Braxton, and Dallas made theirs. I was actually impressed with Braxton's foul shots. Looks to me like he has improved his form from the line.

Well...that game wasn't nearly as close as I thought it would be. Yikes, true old fashioned butt-kicking. Don "THE PERV STASH" Verlin tried to intimidate us and out tough us. Bad plan against a team like Weber. It just didn't work. Old's was definitely right in his analysis. Idalol seems very one-dimensional. It was the attempted Victor Sanders show. He is good. There is no doubt about that, and to say that Idalol isn't talented is a lie. Just seemed to me that they don't really have a facilitator and have poor chemistry. I heard their PG is dealing with a bad bone bruise. Same thing that has happened to Joel last year. It must be really something. Joel missed two games because of his. Maybe there is some malingering going on?

Other issues afflicting idalol, other than not having a facilitator is that they really need a glu guy. There is potential for them. Just the guys aren't quite mature enough yet. There is hope for the Stash and Idalol yet.

Weber did a great job of facilitating and moving the ball on offense. At times, it was a pure thing of beauty. The pass Richardson made to Hill in the paint for a dunk was out of this world; INCREDIBLE!! The refs were suspect, two times Vandals tried to take off our guys head and nothing was called and most importantly, why do they target Cannon so much. The guy can't get away with anything. One thing that could really help Cannon is to do some speed training. I know this will sound weird, but flexibility, traditional lifting, and speed training could improve his defense immensely.

The ball movement was really good. 14 for 24 from 3's was a result of it as most of this 3's were very good looks. Rahe mentioned after the game the Baker at the 4 gives him more time to set up for 3's since the other team's 4's aren't used to chasing their guy out that far. I thought that was an interesting comment.

No doubt that Braxton has worked on his FTs. You can tell he is now confident when he steps to the line. And Cannon getting called -- how about Dallas? He gets pushed all over the place on the offensive end and he tries to do anything on defense and the whistle blows. It was almost humorous to watch him last night. He was getting so frustrated -- and I couldn't blame him.

Tal, I have said it since before the season began; Cannon is not quick enough to guard other points! And now that he has lost his aggressiveness with the ball in his hand he looks like he should be playing at a lower Division level. He could dominate there... I like Cannon but just think that he is playing at a higher level than he is able to compete effectively at. Looks to me like we will have to cut one scholarship next year. Is there a chance it could be him? Does anyone have the inside scoop about who may not be cutting it and will be cut after the season?

No way they cut Cannon. He is a solid ball handler/facilitator and a good defender.

Our guard line is just stacked with talent. I noticed that Cannon, Richardson, John, and Harding are all playing about ten minutes per game. I wonder If Rahe's strategy is to have those four share minutes equally to tire out the oppositions guards? We look less tired down the stretch this year. I think this is why.

Our guard play, top to bottom, is the best it has been for a while. Yes, we have just one standout guy in Senglin. However, all of the rest of them are playing at a high level. On any given night, any of them can really impact a game, and often have. Cody has been very, very good. If left alone, Richardson can light it up. Harding and Cannon are coming off the bench with confidence and aggressiveness. In a guard dominated league, I wouldn't trade ours for any other BSC team's. :coffee:
