In the Weight Room

Got a report from the weight room this morning. Session started at 6:00 a.m. Everyone was there at 5:30 because after the meeting on Tuesday night, everyone is aware of Coach Smith time. Front Squats, straight leg dead-lifts, and other lower body and core exercises. Everyone working hard. Coach Smith and all of his coaches were there for the duration. That is impressive. When your head coach gives a damn, so does everyone else.

Let's hope that we incorporate some other plyometrics for explosiveness and not train in the 'draconian' methods of past. sometimes you have to get with the times.... use the Smith Press for squats if you have to, no need to go deep, as long as you break parallel you're good unless you're going to the Olympics. Use the hack squat machine more, and the leg press. Frontal squats produce a lot of injuries because of the many moving parts in the lift.

there's a roman chair lift machine by the window, that will help develop lower back core muscles and minimize hamstring injuries.

good, no GREAT news to hear them in the weight room. i heard that WSU has received another large contribution on behalf of Coach Smith's long time friend on the West Coast and that money is earmarked for the weight room and enlarging and improving it....i heard it was mid 6 figures, very nice.

GO CATS

That is impressive! I'm glad to see that they are back on track. I felt like the team took a step backwards in the weight room last year, with Coach Mac letting Cecil take control over the weight lifting and putting Coach Hohn on the back burner. I am a big believer of Front Squats and Power Cleans, you won't hurt yourself going too low. Nine times out of ten you hurt yourself by improper technique which includes not going low enough.

Apparently another good day in the wieght room with upper body workouts. Plyos on Saturday. I think we are on track with buildilng good physical players. Hopefully they are working on the mental and focus side a bit too.

Great updates. Keep up the good work. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Cats changes this spring.

Does anyone know if any players aren't coming back? I know that a bunch of recruits are coming in this weekend. Lets hope things go well. Also, I'd like to see more coming from the school with regard to the program. Hard to build excitement, if we don't know what is happening.

I heard from a player that all freshman DB's were transferring....? Also heard that Coach Smith opened a can of whoop a$$ with the team- holding everyone accountable. I like that!

I don't know exactly which ones you are talking about, but all the good ones are still at WSU and enrolled in Spring semester.
Also If a kid wants to transfer because John L is laying down the law then good riddance. I don't want guys here who don't want to work hard and play ball.

Hey, Coach Smith lays down the law and expects accountability, but he is understanding and gives everyone a chance too. Example: last night some moron was waxing his snowboard in Deseret Towers and set off the smoke alarm in the building. One of our players stood out in the parking lot for a couple of hours, and then proceded to sleep through his cell phone alarm. He called immediately upon waking up, explained the situtation, and will take the opportunity to make up this work out this afternoon. When he visited with the coaches they all understood, but made sure the workout would be completed sometime during the day. Said player told his dad on the phone this morning (early) that as soon as he can, he is going to buy the loudest alarm clock he can find. Sometimes I wish they would listen the first time.
