Injuries at Safety caught up to EWU

And we were short on line backers today. Albert Havili went out of the game on our first return and Pugsly was also out of the game. Usually we are playing those guys to relieve our starters. Ronnie Hamlin has been playing with an injured shoulder the last couple of games and it may have contributed to missed tackles today.

clock management has been horrible for the past 4 years, not sure why it isn't something we are working on. They left ~45 seconds on the clock from snapping plays too fast. The 2nd down incompletion was hurtful too :(

KUPP WAS WIDE OPEN1!!!!!! UGH :(

Makes you wonder with Tevin McDonald playing what if......

Great year for the players who gave it everything they had!

First impression, nearly all the big plays passing were on soft coverage and no blitz pressure. have yet to rewatch the game esp, the 4th quarter. Held West to 114 yds. Losing Havili early was more critical. My impression was playing soft coverage in 4th on the boundary receivers (6-8 yds per pass to the edge and out of bounds) and allowing their non-throwing QB to stand in pocket unmolested against standard 3-4 man rush was more damaging then missing Tevin. we brought extra guy in 3rd and shut them down. Know that the front 4 got pressure on QB in 3rd, but he was moving outside the pocket and allowed our DE's to chase him around. He was obviously coached to stay in the pocket on the last two drives and let his tackles protect him. Played on heels with CB's and safeties on last drive when it was time to let er' rip against their #2 QB. Front seven played magnificent. .

I don't agree. Those that had to step up the last 8 games have done a great job. After losing our 4 top safeties for at least 3 weeks, we could have tanked, but the backups came through, along with some corners moving in to fill as well. I don't think you can lay it on the safeties, even though I'm a bit biased.

I think it has less to do with individual players, and more to due with what those injuries did to our depth at Safety. More players, more rotation, fewer injuries and better production from all of them. We'll be solid at safety next season with Tonani, Raynes, and McDonald (hopefully),

No excuses. Thought they did a horrible job of managing the clock on the last drive when the game should've been over.

+1 why throw the ball on second down? Wtf? Good play call on 4th down, but the throw? :?

This is pretty much dead-on. And this is why I always think you have to preach the "now is our time" philosophy at this level. It only takes one or two key injuries to completely tank a season. We basically lost two players in a 3-man starting rotation (Tonani, McDonald) and the third guy in that rotation (Brown) missed a week of game prep due to a family tragedy. Those things happen, unfortunately, and there's not much you can do to prepare for it at this level with 63 schollies. Really, our staff did a good job hiding our shortcomings in this area for as long as they did.

Hopefully, Tonani and McDonald can heal up and return to their old form. If that happens, I feel pretty good about seeing dramatic improvement in this group of players.
