Interesting conversation with Deane Martin

We had an interesting conversation with interim ISU men's coach Deane Martin on the coaches show last night. Deane said he and the current staff are still recruiting hard, "as if we are going to be here next year." He said they are focusing on in-state kids, both seniors and underclassmen, and have offers out to players in each category.

He said ISU has five scholarships to give, but one has been promised already (presumably to Garrett Swanson). He acknowledged the need to find players who can contribute immediately, but also noted that the new stiffer academic requirements ISU has imposed on all sports makes the JC talent pool shallower. He also sounded like ISU has some potential D-1 transfers who may be looking to join the program.

I checked the web site and the show hasn't been archived yet, but it's worth a listen once it is if you're at all interested in the long-term future of the men's program. It will be fascinating to see how all of this plays out over the next several months.

Thanks for posting, good stuff. Very interesting about Martin... do you guys think he will get a long look at being the next head coach for ISU?

Skippy, thanks for the info and it is great interview. Coach Martin is a great guy and can bring a ton to this program.
Lets be honest, ISU mens basketball needs some cash and investment into facilities to be more competitive with the other regional schools. Take Boise State. New basketball locker room, video room, even a players lounge with TV, kitchen, pool table area, and private study area. They have a private gym and all the players have an access badge and can go from 6 am til midnight there. All new this year. Big investment.
Now take ISU. Their locker rooms are ok, but not much bigger than high school. Private players only gym? Not yet. I think if ISU can get some newer facilities they can recruit a bit better.

Anyone want to venture a guess where a lot of Boise State's basketball funding comes from? It ain't season ticket sales...
