WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EARNS NCAA ACADEMIC HONOR
4/24/2008
INDIANAPOLIS – The Sacramento State women’s basketball program received an Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Award from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), it was announced on Thursday, April 24.
The NCAA honored Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
Of the 34 women’s basketball programs in the country that were recognized, just seven were from west of the Mississippi River. Only two of the teams honored, Sacramento State and Stanford, hail from the state of California, which has 23 schools that compete at the Division I level in women’s basketball.
“To be recognized in this elite group is very special for our University and our women’s basketball team,” Paul Edwards, Director of the Sacramento State Student-Athlete Resource Center, said. “This award shows that we have a system with the people in place, as well as the resources to allow our student-athletes to continue to improve academically.”
“This honor is a great tribute to the quality of student-athletes we’ve recruited, and speaks volumes to their overall commitment in the classroom,” Sacramento State head women’s basketball coach Dan Muscatell said. “The recognition is something that is shared by our entire administrative team, as well as our academic support staff.”
The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000.
