Is Dan Muscatell Next?

But, I think Dan will get one more year.

Especially when everyone start's saying, 'but we have young players'. ie. excuse. He probably ought to have another year and then decide. But we should be at least .500 every year. Once you get over 100 L's tagged to your tenure, chances are a new person is needed.

Dan deserves one more year. Women's basketball has been an even tougher sell because of the gym. At least his girls that he has now are very competitive and I think next year will be their breakout year. If it doesn't happen, then we need to relook at the situation.

You all must have forgotten that Muscatell is the leading ass kisser in the big sky. Otherwise he would have been fired 2 years ago.

I don't see much promise for next season. Every year Muscatell points to the newcomers as if "this is the class that's going to finally help us win" ....he will continue to point to the future until it's taken away from him. Then he will have to move on to coaching high school or being an assistant again-he is done as far as head coaching with that record

hornetalumni,

He's not an "ass kisser"... He's just a genuinely nice guy. I know him fairly well and have talked to him a lot about some of his frustrations and the lack of progress his teams have showed.

However, I am of the opinion that this year is and should be his last shot at redemption. Anything less than a BSC tourney birth, and he's on the way out IMO.

He is only nice to people that might have an influence on his job.If he was a genuinely nice guy, maybe just one of his players on his current roster would like him-and i mean like him not just be friendly because he dictates their playing time. He needs more than a BCS birth to save him. If it takes him 6 years to get the team to be the 3rd to last team in the league then he needs a new career. Anyway thats a pointless statement because he won't even get the bcs birth anyway.

You should see how he treats his players when people above him aren't around. He needs more than a BCS birth to save him. Alumni, trust me I had no bearing on his job status. I've seen him conduct practice and even sat in on a film session. YES, he yells at girls, get over it. It's DI athletics, not 3rd grade girls CYO He yells, he coaches, he doesn't insult the players or offend them.

And I think another "BSC" tourney birth in 08-09 extends his contract by a year. If they miss out again, I'm all for the ax.

From what I hear from the the players (who are the only people who know the real story) is that he is in fact, offensive and unnecessarily insulting. They have said he will act like the nicest guy ever around their parents and the public but is a different person in practice and the locker room. But once again, how he treats them as people would only matter if he was successful on paper....but he's not.

Another reason to give him one more year...

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EARNS NCAA ACADEMIC HONOR

4/24/2008

INDIANAPOLIS – The Sacramento State women’s basketball program received an Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Award from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), it was announced on Thursday, April 24.

The NCAA honored Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

Of the 34 women’s basketball programs in the country that were recognized, just seven were from west of the Mississippi River. Only two of the teams honored, Sacramento State and Stanford, hail from the state of California, which has 23 schools that compete at the Division I level in women’s basketball.

“To be recognized in this elite group is very special for our University and our women’s basketball team,” Paul Edwards, Director of the Sacramento State Student-Athlete Resource Center, said. “This award shows that we have a system with the people in place, as well as the resources to allow our student-athletes to continue to improve academically.”

“This honor is a great tribute to the quality of student-athletes we’ve recruited, and speaks volumes to their overall commitment in the classroom,” Sacramento State head women’s basketball coach Dan Muscatell said. “The recognition is something that is shared by our entire administrative team, as well as our academic support staff.”

The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000.

cool. too bad it's the basketball not debate team. muscatell is a coach not a tutor. that is not why he gets paid. i don't believe sacramento is going to be buying tickets to watch some great students lose games.

You might want to reconsider that last statement, HA. What good are stud athletes if they're off the field/court because they're academically ineligible? A great part of recruiting is finding academically viable student-athletes. Similarly, a great part of maintaining a winning program is ensuring that the student-athletes make grades. So the coach doesn't actually do that himself. S/he has folk around him that tutor and ensures that the position coaches kick some butt if the kids start fooling around.

Remember that regardless of how corrupt the NCAA is and how it's increasingly becoming an unpaid minor league, these kids are students first. We've failed the kids if they're not prepared for life/work after sports.

"Similarly, a great part of maintaining a winning program is ensuring that the student-athletes make grades."
I didn't know we were talking about a winning program here.....where have I been all winter?? Bottom line is coaches are hired to win other wise we'd just give all the athletic scholarships to the best high school students

What about contracts, his contract was up this year, and I have not seen a release on the status of his contract. Did he extend, is it pending??

Just asking

Hornetalumni.....I don't know who you are talking to but it sounds like sour grapes to me. It would be a huge mistake to get rid of Dan. The incoming freshman this year were the real deal. They stepped up to the challenge and they turned out to be great kids...obviously got it done in the class room also. This program would go into a tail spin to change anything right now. Dan is on the right track and making a difference. These girls all played to the end of every game and have developed good friendships with each other. They will have great leadership next year in some of the older girls that have shown a true commitment to this team. It's nothin but up for the Hornets. Get behind the program and support it. Sac State has all the right people in place with their coaching staff and players.

Huge mistake to get rid of the 27-111 career record? Your right, he has proven he deserves more years and more losses. I don't know or care how good of friends the players are, good for them but that doesn't change the fact that the team is at the bottom of the big sky year after year - I would like to see hornet athletics, especially football and basketball, turn around and extending contracts of losing coaches is not getting this school anywhere. We made a much needed change with the football program and the men's team, now it's time to show some concern for the lack of progress with the women. I have and will support the hornets regardless but any true fan wants success no matter what that takes. There is a decent group of seniors leading the way next year and if they don't finish in the top 5 I can't see how there wouldn't be changes.
