Know this isn't football related except that I mention tennis occasionally because we play matches on Saturday during football season. Been playing 20 years in ALTA and the Seniors team (55+) I'm on came from middle of the pack mid season to secure a playoff spot. Even more improbable we needed to take every match at the end of the season against a very good team and won 2 of the matches in 3rd set tiebreaks. Long shot on the best of days. In the playoff's we won through to the Finals this past week, winning the Championship against a team that had beaten us in the regular season. It's my first City Championship and I played with a 70 year old who was my first partner when I moved here in 2000. We won our match 6-2 6-4. This is a true "comeback kids" type of story in many aspects.
The big deal for me and the team was 3+ years ago, I was nearly dead from misdiagnosed Type1 diabetes and could hardly pick up a stick for nearly 2 years due to complications of muscle wasting and metabolic syndrome. Anyway, I know many on here have likely dealt with their own challenges. It was this group of guys that made me work to get back physically and mentally. I learned that food is your medicine, patience is a virtue and tomorrow isn't guaranteed to anyone. Getting back out on the court in a meaningful way was one of my key goals and helped sustain me through the ups and downs of managing my condition. Everyone in Atlanta was excited to get back out there this Spring after last year's issues. I was able to pay some of the support everyone gave me forward by guiding an old friend back to the courts and better health in the past 6 months. He played in the Championship match as well after not being a part of a team for 7 years. It was too easy to lose touch with people in 2020 and it was only a chance meeting that got us together again. Let's just say I've been to far too many funerals in the past couple of years. All youngish men, most unexpectedly.
Is it the hat? Know facing this personal challenge, reaching out to close acquaintances, loving my family, using tennis as a measuring stick for my health and perseverance brought me through. To close the loop, I see this as part of the better nature of being an Eastern Eagle throughout my life. I've enjoyed this community and glad to share a small piece of the Eagle heritage with everyone here. It may be the hat. Take care and God bless.
I'm the one in the Eastern hat (blue shirt) and the tall guy is my 70 year old partner.
