Is TV a benefit?

I ran into a so called Eagle fan today at a local restaurant. When I mentioned the game tomorrow he said he was watching it on TV. Holy S#$t is that really a fan? A home game and people sit home and watch on TV. What does Eastern get out of the TV games?

I guess it depends on where you live. I live in Olympia but have made it for every game thus far, including WSU and plan to be in Portland next week... but I will be watching this ISU game on TV to give my wife, and even myself, a break from the 5 hour drive. If nothing else, TV contracts go on to fund the athletic department at most universities and conferences. It's not all bad. The PAC-12 network generates a TON of money.

I am very aware of the benefits provided to members by the Pac 12 network. The Pac 12 network IS NOT SWX, Root, or any other network covering Big Sky teams. What does Eastern get out of SWX carrying the Idaho St game? The "fan" I referred to lives IN Spokane yet he sits home.

I am still a pretty recent graduate and just don't have the money to make it to games. That, and I live in the northwest section of Washington. I just can't afford to go to games at this point in my life. I thought I had scrounged enough money to make a trip to the PSU game, but then my wife got appendicitis.... emergency rooms are expensive.

That said, digital access to the games have been a godsend. There is no way I could have kept up my EWU football passion without it.

There is a huge advantage to recruiting especially if kids from all over the country know that they will be on TV every week so that family and friends can see them play. The games have been streamed since I believe 2010ish maybe earlier, so it's not like they can't be accessed and have people stay home and watch so any extra revenue the department can squeeze out of SWX is a benefit because it would be on the Big Sky app anyway.

As for the yocals near and around Spokavages that don't show up because of the "drive" who knows. Parking could be a problem or seating, but the atmosphere for the games is a 1000 times better than what it was when I was going to EWU in the 90's with about 7K more at each game as well.

Another issue that comes up more often you might think especially this time of the year is GU hoops games and then that team down south of us.

For me, I work every Saturday. It is very rare that I can make it out of work before 2 pm, and often don't make it out till much later. I am never able to commit to a game that starts before then even if I do find I can leave early, and by then the games are typically sold out anyways. I am extremely happy to be able to DVR games, or watch them on demand on the big sky app. Also, some that have been on ESPN3 were able to be seen on demand.

But, thank goodness for a 3:35 pm start time! I will be there this Saturday! Almost was going to be able to make it to Portland as well.

While I agree a local fan should absolutely be in attendance, what you've said is 100% accurate. When it comes to recruiting, kids always want to be at a place where they'll be on TV. There's no way their friends and family can be at every game, so being on TV allows them to still get the attention they want.

In fact, you can really trace the moments when FCS teams got to the point where the goods ones can regularly compete with the BCS-level teams with the time in which wide format cable and satellite created a proliferation of channels to air mid-major teams. 20 years ago, Eastern would be on TV once a year at best. Now, almost every game is televised somewhere.

Some "fans" require easy accessibility to sports franchises. Chances are that the person would have significantly less interest in EWU football if their product was not on television. They need instant gratification from their couch. If EWU doesn't broadcast their games, WSU sure as hell can. This has been the case for years. It is better for that "fan" to watch three games on television and ATTEND one home game than not attend or watch one single EWU game.

I've got 3 young kiddos and I only get to attend 1 game/year, but being able to watch the other games is a huge blessing. I get to introduce the kids to the eagles from home. Additionally I know for my co-workers that aren't alumn are willing to watch them play because they are another local team to root but, but not one that they would necessarily want to go see live.

I get why some can't make the games and watch on TV, but anyone that is local and missing out on the current tailgating that is happening in Cheney before the games is TRULY missing out. What an atmosphere!! Hanging out with good friends....BBQ....just can't be replicated on the couch. If you can make the trip to Cheney and take in the Tailgate----DO IT! You won't be sorry.

go eags!

Everything said by all respondents about the benefits of EWU being on TV is valid. Glad to have you as a superfan, but not everyone is at your level. Snarkiness just isn't your style. ;)

The home games being televised have been a godsend to me this year. My kids have are all school age now, and their sports have had us occupied from morning to early afternoon. I have only been able to go to three games total this year, but I will be there for all the playoff games. Speaking for the local Spokane market, I think it has been a good thing too. I know quite a few people with no ties to eastern that have developed a rooting interest in the team the past few years which is a good thing. However, to beat a dead horse, what I think is holding more casual Spokane fans back is our stadium situation. Get that fixed, and I bet people would be surprised with what happens. With that being said I am still amazed at how much the gameday experience has changed the past twenty years.

Forum thread statistic:

"Godsend" has been used three times by three different users. I would say that TV has been a net positive.
