Is WSU football overtaking basketball

Does anyone else feel like the excitement has shifted from basketball to football? I know the football season is about to start and we have the most hype going in to this season than we have ever had before. But it just seems like are basketball program has gotten bland over the past few years. Every year we have 6 new faces in the program and start with poor chemistry. Every year the schedule is about the same with few games against decent programs. It's also the same excuses. For the first time, I think I am more excited for football than basketball.

Personally, I think it is a good problem to have. Basketball is going to be competitive every year. It is something Weber State fans don't hope for, but expect. Winning 20 games has become ho-hum for us (we are spoiled). This years basketball team will, once again, be in the thick of things and will be vying for a championship. Whereas with football, it is an added bonus whenever the program is strong. Having a good football program only increasing the hype for other programs on the campus. It isn't normal to be competing for football championships in Ogden. So, whenever there is talk of Weber State Football being competitive enough for a championship, that is definitely exciting.

I have felt like this for a few seasons now. I love Jay Hill's mentality. He thinks like how I wish Rahe talked. Jay Hill is over here telling media he wants his players to play like they are Alabama, and that they can only afford one loss to stay relevant. He has gone on record saying that he wants to play the best teams, make a team that is fun to watch, having expectations, demanding more from himself, going after the best players in recruiting, him actually out recruiting teams that are FBS, he even takes blame when the team loses. The same can not be said about Randy Rahe. After 12 years, we have seen no change to anything. It is very hard to get behind a team lead by Rahe. It is very easy to get behind Hill. Watching basketball lately, as mentioned by other posters, truly has become a chore of sorts. He know what to expect, and you know nothing will ever change or get fixed. Basketball has hit a ceiling and is plateauing or even declining. Football is on the upswing, and I dont see it stopping with Hill here. When we beat Utah on the 30th, you will see a much more emphasis around here on football than basketball. You know things are bad for bball when fans are content with CIT games and Delaware State.

What planet have you been living on. There have been significant changes made each year, and dramatic changes the last two years. You must be a very casual observer to make that statement. You can complain about scheduling two+ patsies every year, but to say what you are saying tells me that you either don't come to the games or you don't pay attention. I can also see where you might be tired of hearing the same things every year from the coaching staff. I just take it as coach speak. If they say anything else they get fried by the press and some fans. Coaches just take the easy path with the media and use the tried and accepted coach speak. :coffee:

I think you olds, have been living on some purple planet. Please expound on these "significant changes made each year." Are you referring to high player turn over, losing by 30+ points in the quarterfinals?? I have legitimately only stated facts. Please tell me how we have improved or any teams we have beaten that are high quality. Facts are facts old. Dont let your Rahe crushing get in the way of reality.

I am pretty sure we have nearly all decided that with Rahe, the program has peaked.

I get excited for both year in and year out, I have for the almost 20 years I have been adamantly following both programs.

Is football overtaking Basketball? Maybe, but it's only because Weber has NEVER been really successful in Football but has ALWAYS been a top contender for a Big Sky Basketball crown. It is something that we as spoiled fans have come to expect. Whereas in Football we get a winning season every few years or so. Think about it, when Weber won the title in 2008 it had been 40 years since Weber won it prior. Weber has never been a football school.

So yes, maybe the excitement for Football is higher than Basketball, but in my opinion it has nothing to do with how "stale" the basketball product has become. Because in my opinion it hasn't become stale or even a CHORE to watch. It's because Weber football is in uncharted territory. Jay Hill has turned this football program into a National Contender in 4 years and there are now expectations of more BSC titles and more trips to the playoffs and even talks of winning National Championships. That is the reason people are excited.

Basketball will continue to be a contender for a Big Sky title and will continue to get support from it's loyal fan base. But football deserves the excitement because this current program is doing something that is very, very, very rare at this school.
