What happened in 1986? I see that ISU finished 3rd in the conference but was not eligible for the Big Sky tournament.

We were on NCAA probation because of Wayne Ballard, a variety of offenses, if I recall. In 1985-86, Jim Boutin had arguably his best team and played great defense.

Explain this Wayne Ballard fella and what transpired that year that prevented our entry to the BigSky Tourney

Ballard came to ISU after Lynn Archibald . He came from Texas. He brought in some great ball players but had to pay them or give them jobs where they did not really work but got paid etc etc and then NCAA came in and gave ISU a probation period. Some of the names he brought in:

Chris Blocker who then left for CSI then to UTEP where he and a guy named Tim Hardaway took Utep in the late 80's with the BEAR to the Sweet 16.

He also brought in the name....Nelson Peterson of whom you all know of his son who now plays for Minn Vikings . that in itself can tell you why Wayne got in trouble....

there was a guy named Jackie Flurry who was with Lynn but finished with Wayne and he could fill it up. 6'3" 170 sopping wet....but he could fly and shooot and glide like no other. pound for pound the best player ISU ever had.....from NEW ORLEANS AREA....

Buck Shavez who played for Wayne was a good ball player. came in from a CA JC

Doug Moratzka who lives in idaho and has been a high school coach was there with Wayne. He came in from a JC in WYO...

Local name Mike Denkers was there a while...Started with Lynn went on mission came back and played the rest for Wayne....Pocatello Indian product

Mike Williams was drafted by the Sonics but lasted only 2 days....Wayne got him to come to ISU..Prop 48 big time....

there you have the Wayne Ballard tenure.....they were a good bunch of ball players...not too good on the studies side except for Moratzka and Denkers.....
