At the coaches luncheon yesterday... The Wizard said that Jake will be getting back from his mission this May, I believe, and that he should be playing next fall. I'm not sure if Jake Grey-shirted, or Red-shirted his pre-mish year, but if he did grey-shirt then he will have a red-shirt year still available to him. With Orchard back, that will give Weber depth at the 2 or 3 positions. I'm thinking that Blake Davis and Byron Fulton will both be red-shirted next year, and that Coach will get a JC wing. Anyway, for those of you who don't know Jake... Jake is a pure shooter and a tenacious defender. LIke most of Rahe's recruits... He never quits and plays hard the entire the game. He was, one of the Utah 4A's most prolific scorers his senior season at Highland High.

He was also a heck of a football player at Highland, first team all-state and one of the best high school receivers I've ever seen. He probably could have played Division I football as well as basketball, especially if he was a little bigger.

He is an exceptional athlete... It will be good to have him back. Also, its good that he will have six months to get back into shape. As I remember he was a very soft-spoken and shy kid, but an intense competitor. I guess his dad and the Panos come to every game together. Pretty cool that his family is still supporting Weber State while their son is still gone.
Hey JimmyD... Could you by any chance get his stats from high school?? Do you have any connections at the paper that could get you those things...

According to WeberHoops.com Orchard redshirted the 2006-07 season. I think he wants to be done with college before he's 30. Sorry Mahoney...LOL, or should I say Mahoney-hawk or is it Mahonahawk!?

Granted, Weberhoops.com is an exceptional site; however, I believe that the administrator, at the time, or may still, did not know the difference between a Grey Shirt and a Red Shirt...Nevertheless, in this instance, he is probably right. To Grey Shirt, the Student-Athlete cannot be enrolled full-time, and I think Jake will come back to Weber as a sophmore/Junior academically. Also, with as much time as he has to get back into shape, I don't see him using a red-shirt, even if he still has one.

According to WeberHoops.com he redshirted...

How could he take 24-30 credits and be a junior next year? Makes no sense...

According to you...he redshirted. You still don't know the difference between a Grey Shirt and a Red Shirt. A lot of LDS and Activated Military, can get a Grey Shirt which doesn't burn your redshirt. As long as they are gone for longer than a year, if you return and re-enroll in school it automatically burns the grey shirt stipulations and burns a red-shirt for the previously missed year. Also, some students passed AP tests, took concurrent enrollment, or do Early College (among other things) that count toward college credit, some new students are actually already college Jrs. So Academically he could be further along than athletically...

Well since he went to school full-time it kinda makes it hard to gray shirt.

How do you know that he went to school full-time?? Do you have his transcripts?? Were you in all of his classes? I'll ask the General, he knows. Besides, why are we arguing over something that doesn't really matter. He's a wing, but probably will play sparingly next year, since Bull and a JC will split most of the time at that position. Davis, is a wing, but will most lilkely red-shirt...

I agree with Catcat... I think Bob and tal both need to chill... Who cares! Its nice to know that Jake will be back, and that he will have, no matter what, four years of eligibility.

I found Orchard's all-state profile from the Deseret News. He was the 2006 4-A state MVP, and I think Highland won the championship that year (Panos was also on the team).

4A MVP
Jake Orchard, Highland, Sr., 6-3, G

Orchard led the Rams to 4A title by averaging 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. A good chunk of his points came from the foul line. In four state tournament games, Orchard made 15-of-19 free throws.

His stats aren't incredible, but when you consider that he had another teammate who was a future D-1 player and a solid supporting cast (good enough to win state), you expect the numbers to be underwhelming.

He was the 4A MVP...thats not bad. 17pts, 5 rebounds, and 2 assits... Good "Blue Collar" (as the Wizard would say) work.
