JENKINS TO BE HONORED BY THE SACRAMENTO STATE BLACK STAFF AND FACULTY ASSOCIATION

2/7/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jerome Jenkins, who is currently in his eighth season as the Hornets’ head men’s basketball coach, will be honored on Tuesday, Feb. 19, by the Sacramento State Black Staff and Faculty Association for his contributions to the program and the University.

The event, which is called a Tribute to Jerome Jenkins, will feature a series of guest speakers and many former players will be in attendance. The festivities will take place on Feb. 19 inside the University Union’s Redwood Room from 5:30-8:00 p.m. (social from 5:30-6:30). People wishing to attend the event should RSVP to Martinique Baker at (916) 278-6348.

Jenkins is the third-longest tenured men’s basketball coach in program history (1948-pres.) and ranks third all-time with 80 career victories. The Hornets have reached the Big Sky Tournament four times in the last five years, and the team has led the conference in steals every year during Jenkins’ tenure.

Sacramento State resumes its three-game homestand this week with games against both Eastern Washington (Thursday, Feb. 7, 7:05 p.m.) and Portland State (Saturday, Feb. 9, 7:05 p.m.).

Better get to honorin' now because there isn't much time left for him. I think this is a bit of a joke though. He's great because he turned a program into 12 black players and 1 white player per year? Why make it even about race, just honor his tenure!

Before I switched majors, I was in the kinesiology program and I heard lots of nasty things about Jenkins from the trainers who sat in on practices and went on road trips. Apparently Jenkins' distain for white folks is well-known among his current and former players.

White men can't jump!

Not to turn this in to a race thing, but why don't we have a Sacramento White Staff and Faculty Association?

This reverse discrimination is BS!!

The all black fraternity at SAC has one white guy.

I hope that he enjoys his "Tribute" as much as we will enjoy getting a new coach! The criteria for "Tributes" these days must be pretty low these days if they are honoring someone for failing in every acspect of his job for 8 years.

I disagree with this statement. Look, there are many things still outside of his control in regards to the facilities we have...but at least this program isnt the laughingstock it was in the mid to late 90's when I was one of very few who was at every single home game. So none of his kids have graduated? How about 18 of them by semester's end. How about giving us Hornet fans something to look forward to when Mooshagian was too busy running the football program into the ground. Im not happy where the program has been the past year and a half...but its DAMN better than 10 years ago.

Facilities have nothing to do with delivering a well disciplined team to the court, that is a coach's responsibility. Recruiting a team with a good work effort who will get the job done in the classroom and on the court is a coach's responsibility. Understanding the situation you have and doing the best with it is a coach's responsibility. I am sorry I don't care what happened 10 years ago, this program has been in a decline since Don Newman and it needs to be stopped now. We don't need anymore playground supervisors we need a real coach with a vision and a way of getting it done in reality. Like everyone I would like to see a better place to play, weather it be on campus a new King Arena at Cal Expo or whatever. I am sure that it would help recruiting. I would rather have a team lacking athletic ability representing the University with good skills, discipline and pride than what we have now. I for one will be very disappointed if Wanless and the Administration do not make the rational decision to go another direction with the men's basketball program

I think that change is going to happen. What I took issue was the fact you said he has failed in every aspect of his job for eight years...and that's a flat out lie. Up until last season, people may have problems with some of the X's and O's, but we were winning and competitive and then the wheels fell off and that's where we need to change because this year has continued upon's last year's slide. I think we were all waiting to see if last year was just an abberation and this year confirmed that it wasn't. And if you care, you need to look at the program's history because that will tell you where the problems we have came from.

Because of the successes in the four-year run, even with last year and this year, Jerome has made the program now attractive for when a coaching change will happen. After Abatemarco quit, who really wanted to come here? That's why Debby promoted Jerome. A career assistant up til that point and he was already here (coaching continuity for the current players). This year's schedule was made for three players we don't have anymore because they couldn't get their own acts together (personally, academically, socially). That is where it has bitten Jerome in the rear and it will probably cost him his job.

GREAT post SHA . . . you are right on the money with the state of the program now versus when Jerome took over. He got burned by some recruiting decisions which started the downward spiral - academic issues leading to A.P.R. issues which has led to his youngest, least experienced and IMHO his least talented team. With that said there is obviously some coaching going on because this group appears to be showing some steady improvement, especially on the defensive end.

As for the tribute, it's deserving but sure has the appearance of a bit of a power play. That's disappointing because there are aspects to this tenure (which, by the way, may or may not continue) that I do really think can and should be celebrated. It just doesn't seem to smell real good right now.

Great point wrkrb...

This event is a total power play. You know someone will raise a stink if Jenkins is fired by comparing him to his white predecessors.

Let's just hope Wanless doesn't give in to the pressure. I think if he were planning on keeping him, Jenkins would have already had a 1 year extension offer on the table...

If it's that obvious, does that make me a die-hard CSUS fan?

Nothingridge and Portland State have the same gym we do, bought in a 1955 Sears catalog.

Seriously, these two programs are doing well, so it is not completely the gym. Look at Fresno, they are sub. 500 and play in a Taj Mahal on campus.

If a decision is reached and it is a tie, use the attendance figures this year for the deciding vote. Abysmal at only 500 or so a game, not counting Kadeezy and SHA.

A coach has to elicit excitement in the program also.

I think Wanless will offer Jenkins a token 1 year contract because the university has no plans for the basketball program anyway so what does it matter. Besides, Wanless doesn't want to be seen as insensative by the rest of the league getting rid of one of the most tenured coaches in the conference in a year he had to play with his 2nd unit. What's to be gained? Face it, no one cares except maybe 5 people on this post. The program is really not that important. What, 500 avg home attendance. It was about 700 when they were going to post season every year. The basketball program can go undefeated and not sell out that gym. Jenkins knows this so he's gonna bail and do what every coach before him has done when they left--a lot better. NBA, WNBA. Even the ex-football coach and ex-womens basketball coach has moved on and improved their lot. Jenkins will be a hot recruiter should he chose to leave. He's turned Sac State into a competitive program, his graduation numbers will improve at the end of the year, he's had at least 5 players either drafted or play at the professional level. His record will go down as one who's done more with less. Meanwhile, It would take 3 to 4 years for the next coach to come in here and win 5 conference games.
