Portland State alum Jesse Thompson has been hired as the Vikings' new running backs coach and begins work immediately in preparation for the 2008 season. Thompson replaces former running backs coach Frank Geske, who moved on to become Head Coach at Marist High School in Eugene following spring football.

Thompson will also assist the football program with speed, strength and agility training. He has worked as a personal trainer, as well as with the Nike/SPARQ training program.

"Because of his background in training, flexibility work and physical conditioning, we thought Jesse would be a great addition. His first job is to improve Bobby McClintock's flexibility as he is coming off knee surgery," said Viking Head Coach Jerry Glanville.

"I'm thrilled to be back at my alma mater," said Thompson. "My goals are to help all of our running backs do the same as I was able to; have fun playing football, get a degree and win a bunch of games along the way. I want them to make the most of their college experience, and I'm excited about the talent level I will be working with."

Thompson spent the 2007 season as the running backs coach at Northern (SD) State, where they employed the Spread Gun Offense. From 2004 to 2006, Thompson was an assistant coach at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. The first two seasons he was a defensive backs coach, then worked one year with running backs.

A native of Portland, Thompson attended Lincoln High School. He went to College of the Redwoods, Portland State and completed his football career at Southern Oregon. Thompson is a 2001 graduate of Portland State with a degree in Health Education. He spent two seasons coaching varsity running backs at Madison (OR) High School. Thompson was also the freshman head coach for one season and the junior varsity head coach for one season.

He is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Health and Physical Education at Portland State.
