"Weber State football coach Ron McBride has named John Zamberlin an assistant coach with the Wildcat football program. Zamberlin will coach the defensive tackles for the Wildcats.
"John brings a lot of experience and it's great for us to have him here at Weber State," McBride said Monday. "He is very knowledgeable and will be a great teacher for our defense. He is a good team guy who will be a great addition for us."
Zamberlin is no stranger to Weber State or the Big Sky. For the past four seasons he was the head coach at Idaho State. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Eastern Washington.
"It's a great opportunity for me to come to Weber State with coach McBride and Weber State," Zamberlin said. "I have always respected Coach McBride and his staff. We have a great group of players here that are working hard and I'm just excited to be here and help the Wildcats."
Prior to coaching at Idaho State Zamberlin was the head coach at Central Washington for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2006. At Central Washington he compiled a 63-41 overall record and twice advanced the Wildcats to postseason play.
Before becoming a head coach Zamberlin spent nine seasons as an assistant coach with stints at Richmond, Eastern Washington, and Massachusetts.
As a player Zamberlin played linebacker in the NFL for six seasons, playing 78 total games with the New England Patriots (1979-1982) and the Kansas City Chiefs (1983-1984). He was a fifth-round draft choice of New England out of Pacific Lutheran University, where he earned a degree in 1979 in physical education.
McBride also announced Kamaal Ahmad has been named the director of football operations for the Wildcats. Ahmad has been a member of the WSU football coaching staff for the past five seasons.
Weber State begins the 2011 season Sept. 3 at Wyoming."
