MADISON TWP. — The Madison High School boys basketball team reached heights this past season not seen in nearly 30 years.

The Mohawks had a perfect regular-season record, won Division III sectional and district championships and finished the year with a 24-1 record.

The achievements are still coming, but of a more individual nature.

Justin Brunswick, a 6-foot-9 center, will be the first male basketball player in school history to sign a Division I letter of intent this Wednesday, April 28. He is going to Idaho State of the Big Sky Conference.

“I’m surprised to be the first to sign with a D-I school,” Brunswick said. “There have been a bunch of great players come through here. It’s definitely an honor to me.

“Ever since I was little, I wanted to play for a Division I college,” he continued. “I’m very happy my dream has come true.”

According to Madison coach Jeff Smith, Idaho State came into the picture in an interesting way.

Smith said he and Brunswick each had sent videos to Idaho State, but heard nothing.

“I thought that was it,” Smith said.

But then Smith was in a BW3’s restaurant in Indianapolis the weekend of the NCAA Final Four and a man with an Idaho State shirt walked by his table.

Smith said he walked over to the man’s table, introduced himself and asked about the video. The man, who was Idaho State coach Joe O’Brien, said he didn’t think he had seen it, but he would check it out when he returned.

A couple of days later, Smith said he received a call from ISU assistant coach Tim Walsh saying he wanted to come see Brunswick in action. Smith put together a quick workout session, and Walsh came. A few days later, the call came that the Bengals wanted to sign Brunswick.

“The way that came together just shows you can never give up,” Smith said. “We were in the right place at the right time.”

I love the story about how Brunswick's coach ran into Joe O'Brien at the Final Four and thus began the recruiting process. It's a good thing Joe was wearing his ISU shirt!
