With Kaden Jenks the presumptive QB1 going into spring ball it will be interesting to see how the offense changes. Will we move the QB and have more designed runs like we did with Stefan Cantwell in 2017? They are different styles of runners. Cantwell would rather rather run over someone than avoid contact.

Jenks career numbers in games he started:

2018
@Utah
5 of 22 13 yds 0 TD and 0 INT

@Cal Poly
6 of 9 47 yds 0 TD and 0 INT

2019
@Nevada
6 of 21 for 57 yds 1 TD and 1 INT

UNI
19 of 29 for 219 yds 2 TDs and 0 INT

SUU
13 of 22 for 137 yds 1 TD and 0 INT

Small data set, but year 2 was definitely better than year 1. Part of the difficulty in evaluating the two QBs is that we never adjusted the offense for either QB. I think Jenks is every bit as serviceable as Constantine was, but the offense needs to be tailored for his skills/limitations.

I don’t think he’s nearly as mobile as Cantwell was. Schramm has designed some runs for Jenks and it was not effective IMO.

Not as mobile as Cantwell. But far more mobile than Constantine. I don't see him as a QB power type of QB. But I can see him being able to extend a play with his legs.

My feelings are that the QB competition will be wide open this spring and on into the summer/fall. I think we have several in the program, or coming in, that can do a good job for us. I'm still more interested in how we progress along the O line and how our RB corps returns to health/depth. I'm confident that the D will be outstanding once again.

So we have only one QB on the roster now with any experience, who has shown already that he is a below average FCS QB. I submit that the coaches have seen enough of the inexperienced QB's to know if one of them is capable of being the starter next year and performing at an improved level compared to Constantine. Or, they have another QB coming in from the portal or from JC that they believe is an improvement. So it is my guess that they counseled Constantine that his playing time in his last year would be as a backup and that he should register on the portal if he wanted to be a starter. I cannot imagine that they would have gotten rid of Constantine, expecting that Jenks would be the new starter. Surely they have something better up their sleeve.

So @JacobCHatch reported on yesterday’s @LockedOnCougars that there is “mutual interest” in Joe Critchlow exploring coming to Weber State. Joe’s father played at Weber State FWIW. Audio starts at about 22:25 on the 1-28 episode: https://t.co/0BG3w2BLoJ

I'm hoping that there will be an incoming freshman or a sophomore that will take the position by storm this spring and summer. If that doesn't happen, Jenks is a serviceable QB and will be just as good as the O line allows him to be. We all know how much of our success relies on the run game. As long as we are able to run on the better Ds, our O will be good enough to win a lot of games. With our current set of coaches, we will never pass more than we run. It just won't happen, so get used to that fact right away, unless you always want to be disappointed. Our coaches are more interested in winning than getting style points. If that takes a good game manager at QB, then that is what they will have. :coffee:

I love the running game and don’t need to see a ton of passes. I love watching the Wildcats tire out the other teams and dominate time of possession. The offense and QB do have to be good enough to keep the opponents defense honest so they do not stack the line. It would also be good for the offense to have the capability to close a game out when needed, instead of asking the defense to shoulder the load all year. Not running up scores, just putting the game out of reach.

No O line will be able to overcome a defense that stacks the box against the run if the QB and passing game isn’t good enough to respect (finished 12th in pass efficiency—only above Idaho State).

I think the O line can and needs to improve, but the QB and passing game needs to improve by leaps and bounds. A healthy RB group will also be great, too.

It will be interesting to see who ends up the QB. I am hoping it’s a young QB who is duel threat. The play calling will need to be adjusted for the strengths of the starter. I do think there was some improvement in that area last year...let’s hope it keeps improving.

Just glad Coach Hill wasn’t snatched up. Four conference titles in a row would be an amazing accomplishment. I can’t believe that’s a possibility considering where the program was before Coach Hill.

I agree with what you are saying. The only thing I would add is that no QB or passing attack will be efficient with 2 seconds to get a pass off. I believe that our pass game will get better, just because our line will be one year older, one year more experienced, and one more year in the weight room. It will also help if we can bring in some more talent at those positions. It looks like our coaches are trying to do just that. It will also help if we can be a bit more unpredictable on O.
