The exodus continues in the Oregon State women's basketball program.
Kate Lanz - a former Central Catholic High star, all-state player and Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year whose 2009 signing was seen as a major in-state recruiting breakthrough - said Monday that she is leaving the program after one season.
Lanz averaged 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds. Her playing time fluctuated wildly and she averaged 8.3 minutes in 28 games, with no starts.
"I decided to leave because for me to be successful I needed to be in an environment that was positive and it wasn't a positive environment," Lanz told the Oregonian newspaper.
"I needed to make a change."
Five players with remaining eligibility, and an assistant coach, have left the program during the season or since the Beavers concluded Wagner's fifth year as their coach with
12-20 overall and 3-15 Pacific-10 Conference records, and a 16-game losing streak.
More defections have been rumored.
Those not returning at this point are sophomores-to-be Lanz, Taylor Champion and Amaya Gastaminza; junior-to-be Kassandra McCalister, and senior-to-be Talisa Rhea, the team's leading scorer. Assistant coach Kellee Barney will also not return after two seasons on the staff.
Champion transferred to UC Irvine at midseason; Rhea signed with Seattle University last week. Lanz has not announced her new school but it's believed she'll attend Portland State , which won the Big Sky Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2010.
Three players completed their eligibility in 2010. As of Monday, only six of last season's 14 scholarship players are still on the team, and more movement is possible.
The Beavers have signed two players for the 2010-11 season: Alyssa Martin of Jesuit High, the daughter of ex-OSU men's star Earl Martin, and Classye James of Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose, the same school McCalister graduated from.
