Katz Says It's Time to Win

After signing three perimeter players, Sacramento State men's basketball coach Brian Katz hopes his program has reached a turning point.

Katz's first three seasons produced 2-27, 9-21 and 7-21 records.

With eight players and two redshirts to blend with the three recruits, the Hornets coach expects better results.

"Going into year four, we feel about as good as we could feel," Katz said. "Our talent base has definitely moved up. We feel like we spent three years rebuilding. It's time to win."
It is definitely time to win.

"Our talent base has definitely moved up." I'd like to hear how he'd defend that statement. Is he saying the 3 recruits he brought in will replace STB and Duro? Is he expecting more from Owayed and Veteto than he got from N'Diaye and Jackson? What I see is a 7-21 team that lost 2 of its top 3 scorers and finished 2 games worse than they did the year before. What I see is a team with no experienced point guard relying on a seldom used backup and a JC combo guard to run an offense with only 1 of its top 3 scorers returning...Maybe he's being a bit optimistic.

Frankly, I'd like to see a better coaching job to go with the supposed upgrade in talent--and 10 wins would be nice.

Willie, I think you are going to see Garrity get a huge amount of playing time and probably be the starter at the point. I could be wrong but he appears to be the answer at point for the next four years. We needed a point and some shooters, that appears to be what he went after.

The frontcourt is already talented with Alpha, Veteto, Rak, Dickson and Jackson. McCarver will help a little inside also. Carbajal will shoot better, Estrada is a good shooter and Garrity shot it well in high school. Eberhard didn't shoot it well from 3 in JC but did shoot near 50% from 2. Eberhard also did shoot well from the 3 in high school, not sure what happened to his 3 percentage in JC.

Earle, I can agree with that if all the stars align properly. We may have to run a 2 PG set sometime and have Garrity move without the ball to get his shot. Maybe I'm just not giving him enough credit. I need to see his upper body cause I can't see him creating his own shot with any success at the point even if he is a ligit 6'2'' which I doubt. I haven't seen Owayed and know nothing about him so no comment. I think Rak has potential, and Veteto I feel is solid and will add to the depth on the front line. For some reason I'm kind of high on McCarver. I just think he's one of those guys who just needs to play and he'll figure it out. Estrada I think will play right away. I love his size for a cobo guard. Carbajal will need to find his stroke. If he plays to his potential and Estrada and Garrity can shoot it--omg.

I can see where Katz is going with this and I see your point too. But that's still a lot to expect.

I think "hope" is the way I would describe how I see the pieces falling into place next season. With another off season of work/improvement from all the players I do "expect" them to be better equipped for the preseason and league play. We had to get stronger in the backcourt and hopefully Katz is right with these three new additions. We also haven't mentioned Groom. His offseason work should help him be more of an asset next year also.

I think we all agree it's time to see the improvement in next years team that we all had been looking/hoping/expecting to see from the program.
