Ken Bone

So, in addition to the Damian Lillard sighting at last night's OT loss to Weber State, why was Ken Bone standing in the lobby at the end of halftime, peering into the gym? Later, he spent most of the half sitting next to Torre Chisholm.

Can he be in two places at once? He was supposed to be down in Moraga with Gonzaga.

Very interesting.

Travel with the #1 team in the land who is now 26-0 or take in a game at the Stott Center.

Hmmmm.

Times like this I wish we had better coverage. I'm trying to see if there is any news on this and all I keep getting is some guy at a debate wearing a red sweater.

OK. Seems like Bone is not actually an "assistant coach" at Gonzaga, but rather is a "special assistant" to Mark Few. He breaks down film, does some scouting and watches practice, then provides a report to Few. He does not travel with the Zags, which would explain why he was not at their game Saturday.

Thanks for digging that up.

Sounds like he'll probably be on the move in the spring.

Which brings us back to this. I don't know what is more intriguing, Bone there, or Chisholm. After all, we all know why Lillard was there. Maybe it was Old Folks night at the Stott Center.

Torre was just there taking in the game; he still comes to the Stott for MBB and The Park for football quite often. He's quite happy as Executive Director of Special Olympics of Oregon. There's no "there" there.

Maybe the same with Bone. As Marty said in an earlier post, no doubt Bone will be on the move this spring. Geving was his top assistant, Chisholm was his AD, he had an off week, good matchup with Weber in town, why not come take in a game at PSU? Check out the progress of the Pavilion. Get a coffee from the old barista. Cap off what no doubt was a busy week for him, what with the Zags preparing for St. Marys.

We may also see him this Saturday in Missoula.

Portland State Upsets #7 Gonzaga 77-70
December 25, 2008

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The No. 7 Gonzaga Bulldogs lost a stunner
as 21 1/2-point favorites to Portland State 77-70 last night in
Spokane.

The defending Big Sky Conference champions notched their first
win over a ranked team since the Oregon university reinstated its
basketball program for the 1996-97 season.

The Vikings endured a roundabout trip to Spokane after winter
storms closed a portion of Interstate 84. They bused to Seattle and
then across the state to Spokane, arriving yesterday.

University of Portland transfer Jeremiah Dominguez scored 25
points, while University of Hawaii transfer Dominic Waters and
University of Washington transfer Phil Nelson each contributed 16
for Portland State. Dominguez made 7-of-10 3-pointers.

The Zags suffered their second straight loss to drop their
record to 9-3. They lost in overtime Saturday to No. 2 Connecticut
in the Battle of Seattle.

Matt Bouldin paced Gonzaga with 18 points.

Gonzaga was outrebounded 39-30.

Portland State improved its record to 9-3. The Vikings' coach is
Ken Bone, a former University of Washington assistant coach under
Lorenzo Romar.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Jeremiah Dominguez scored 25 points and Portland State upset No. 7 Gonzaga 77-70 on Tuesday night for its first win over a ranked team since it reinstated its basketball program for the 1996-97 season.

Portland State (9-3), which relied on a short, quick lineup, managed to outrebound the Zags 39-30. The Vikings kept the lead by hitting 12 3-pointers.

Portland State, which is 1-11 against nationally ranked teams, broke a 10-game losing streak to Gonzaga.

Gonzaga (8-3) was coming off an 88-83 overtime loss to No. 2 Connecticut in Seattle on Saturday that resulted in the Bulldogs rising one spot in the Top 25. But they looked sloppy against the Vikings, committing 11 turnovers, missing layups and shooting only 42 percent.

It was the Zags' third home loss in 58 games since the McCarthey Athletic Center opened in 2004.

The Vikings, the defending Big Sky Conference champions, endured a roundabout trip to Spokane after winter storms closed a portion of Interstate 84. They bused up to Seattle and then across the state to Spokane, arriving Tuesday.

The teams exchanged the lead most of the second half.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Dominic Waters and Dominguez gave Portland State a 65-61 lead with 4:06 left. Julius Thomas' basket made it 67-62 in favor of the Vikings.

Gonzaga's Josh Heytvelt hit a short jumper, and Austin Daye's steal led to Jeremy Pargo being fouled on the break. He made both free throws to cut Portland State's lead to 67-66 with 2:40 left.

Portland State again threw the ball away and Pargo grabbed the inbounds pass, slammed it home and was fouled. His three-point play gave Gonzaga a 68-67 lead with 2:16 to go.

Waters' runner tied the score at 69 with 1:45 left.

Gonzaga turned the ball over on a possession arrow after Heytvelt's shot stuck against the rim.

Phil Nelson's 3-pointer gave Portland State a 72-69 lead with 44 seconds left. Pargo missed on the other end, and Portland State rebounded and Waters was fouled with 30 seconds left, making both for a 74-69 lead.

Gonzaga's last home loss was to Washington State last season and they had won 10 straight at home since.
