Kicking game

I thought the kicking game was tremendous this year and we need to give a shout out to the kickers and the kicking unit. Kyle Sentkowski was 19 of 23 on field goals and didn't miss an extra point. His 3 field goals helped us beat Idaho State and get the Big Sky conference portion of the schedule started onthe right note. He was also the top kicker in the Big Sky this year. Sam Clark had a 44.4 yard average. These are really good numbers for both players. Well done and a great year for the entire team! Now if we can just keep TT for a few more years.....

Best kicker/punter combo in the country! There are programs at all levels across the country that lose games because of bad kicking games, rare that we can see not a single game swung on bad special teams!

You make a good point, Chi. Just one bone to pick: in all of your quite justified accolades for Sentkowski, you forgot that he set a new school record long FG of (I think) 51 yards. Whoever makes it out of Saturday's game had better be on the lookout for that, because while I would love to see Skattebo, Martin, and the Dynamic Duo go wild, I could see Sentkowski providing the game-winner from mega-distance....

The 51 yard kick puts him in 6th all-time for longest field goal in Hornet history. He didn't mention it because it wasn't a record..... If you don't know what you are talking about, and couldn't be bothered to look it up (which would have taken maybe 2 minutes) then maybe you shouldn't speak to it?

In fact, a kicker who would be a "teammate" of yours (if anyone believed your narrative, which they don't) kicked two longer field goals.

If you were on the sideline as you claimed to have been, I'm sure you would have remembered them....

I'll be the first to say Kyle doesn't get to do what he's done without some awesome support. Starts up front with the snapping of Dustin Cognetti. He's THE most important player in the whole PAT/FG operation! Without him doing his job well, no one else gets to to do theirs. I've said for years the LS is THE most important player for kicking plays...it starts with him and can end with him really quick. "1a" would be all the blockers up front. Those guys have done a fantastic job this year. "2" would be the great job Sam Clark has done holding the ball for placements. Keep in mind, he didn't grow up playing the game and has only been holding a few years. But being a specialist as well, he's been able to put the time in to learning to hold and he's done well. As far as Kyle, he's been told by his dad (ok, that would be me) throughout his football life that he's the least important player on the placekicks and that if the other 10 guys do their jobs correctly, he better do his!

It's been fun watching this unit perform this season and I'm hoping for a long playoff run!

The November edition of the Fred Mitchell Award watch list just came out and we have a player on it. Everyone's heard of the Lou Groza Award but many may not know about the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award.

From their website:
"The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award (also known as the Fred Mitchell Award) is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams.

The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.

The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community.

The Award’s Watch List is released in August, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December.

The school of the award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy is presented each February at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall."

Lots of us remember the days of essentially having no kicking game to speak of.

The Hornets past two kickers have been pretty good. It’s a nice luxury to expect your kicker to make most the kicks he attempts,

Sadly, I remember those years…..4th and 10 at the 12 yard line and we would have to go for it. We are very fortunate to have the kickers we have and we appear to have good kickers (at least on paper) behind them.
