Lakers vs Eagles

Now anyone can tell their version or correction on this story. My neighbor and friend, who is of sound mind and body, just told me a story of his days In EWU administration working at Showalter's. We were talking about our days at EWU (he is a 1968 alum) and had asked him about George Fredrickson since I had talked to George a few times while in school to fund a varsity men's soccer program which he did out of his personal budget but alas Title 9 came in and wrestling, baseball and soccer(after one short year) went out. My neighbor was anti-athletics (thought there was no room for athletics in an acedmic school)) and when he talked to George he asked my neighbor if there was any part of the Spokesman-Review that donated room for sports. Neighbor said yes and George said Eastern athletics should have a large part of that room and that room should be about winning/positive news.
Back to original story. In 1973 when student body voted for the new mascot, after deciding that Savages was not appropriate, that in fact Lakers was the first choice and Eagles the second. He said well you you know how voting and voter count can go. I asked if it had to do with LA Lakers and he said no. Then repeated the same thing bout counting votes. Followed up asking who or how could that happen. He smiled and said some people in admin./and or student body thought Eagles were a more appropriate name for a college and the rest is history. Of course Lakers were based on the 4 lakes close to school. I like Lakers and I liked Savages (the non-indigenous kind).
Had not heard that before.
