Lateef McMullan Signs Letter Of Intent With Viking Basketball

Portland State Basketball Head Coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of Lateef McMullan to a National Letter of Intent for the 2011-12 academic year. McMullan fills a much-needed role at point guard for a Viking team that will have three starters and six letterwinners return next season.

McMullan, a 5-11 point from Tulsa, OK, has played two seasons of collegiate basketball - one at UC Riverside and one at Citrus Junior College.

This past season, he was the starting point guard at Citrus (CA) Junior College. He led the Fighting Owls to a 27-6 record and the California State championship game. Although Citrus lost to City College of San Francisco, 83-81, McMullan scored 23 points, hitting seven three-point field goals in the game. For the season, McMullan averaged 16.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, had 52 steals and made 89 three-point field goals. He was named first team All-State and first team All-Western State Conference South Division.

McMullan played the 2009-10 season at UCR, starting nine of 27 games. He averaged 6.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and shot 41% from three-point range earning Big West All-Freshman Team honors.

"Lateef is extremely quick with the basketball and can get from free throw line to free throw line in a hurry," said Geving. "That's what we need with the style we like to play. He makes good decisions, can break people down off the dribble, then score or make plays for his teammates. Lateef has a great understanding of the game and I expect big things from him."

McMullan's speed and scoring ability should suit the Vikings' up-tempo style. PSU has led the Big Sky Conference in scoring the last four seasons.

"He is a great shooter, a guy that can make baskets. More than that, Lateef is a winner, leading his team to a championship game," said Geving.

McMullan prepped at Flora MacDonald Academy in Gastonia, NC. There, he averaged 20 points per game as a senior.

McMullan joins a Viking team that was 14-16 in 2010-11. In addition to six returning letterwinners, the Vikings have five redshirts that will be eligible to play and have signed three others for 2010-11. Geving anticipates signing at least one more player this spring.

A good get, but another 6'3'' guy.

We need a big man in the most desparate of ways. Catalda and Lezeau are just not going to cut it night in and night out, in the Big Sky.

Montana and Weber are always consistently good, cause they get some big people for some reason. Jamie Jones and Morrision were so potent in the post.

We we will just run them off the floor is our only hope for a title.

Great, good and fine, but we also need tall rebounders. Height is important and is a huge advantage and difference for the elite teams like UConn, Kentucky and Arizona. How about guards who are 6-5, forwards 6-8 and centers 7-1? Recruit them from out-of-the-country if necessary. Think tall, taller, tallest.

One sign of a basketball program needing help is that the players are so much shorter than that of their opponents. Let's get talented and tall (we'd always welcome another Jeremiah Dominguez, though).

Broadway:

you nailed it again, we need a big man in the worst way and we could contend next year, but as we all know they are few and far between.

jamie jones was a special little big man, but i see none of his skill on the horizon.

let's just pack the place next year, heck if the timbers can have 18,000, we can get 1.300 to see awesome basketball and with great views.

Have you seen Cataldo play? I never have, so I'm curious what people who have say about his game. He was so highly rated in high school, got hurt his senior year, and I didn't hear much about him after that.

If he has 1/10 the ability that ESPN or scouts says, seems like he would be able to contribute in the Big Sky right away.

I have seen him, he is a good shooter, good height, but slow and also for now is out of shape. It will be interesting to see what he looks like come fall camp.

I am not sure if he can get it done on the inside as to our needs. I feel bad for him, cause I am sure his health set him back not playing his senior year.

I agree that we need some more big men. We were killed on the boards last season, and it showed at times when we could not get rebounds on either end of the court. However, adding some talented players at the other spots isn't bad.

I was hoping for a big man recruit out of high school that could sit next year as a redshirt and be ready to go the next year. If Cataldo adds any value this next season, then we're better off at the five spot from last year. Nate is Nate, and Tapscott can slide over when we go small, and we did last year.

Hopefully, Geving is eyeballing a big juco transfer for the five spot for next year. If not, we could be sitting with Cataldo and that's it for the season after. With regards to this thread, McMullan looks to be pretty talented. I see a lot of three guard rotations on the horizon...

All great comments.

Unfortunately there is a real shortage of big men across the entire country and especially out west.

Huskies, Cougars, Eagles, Ducks, Beavers, Redhawks, Bulldogs, they are all looking for a quality big man, which are increasingly hard to find period.

If our two big men worked their tails off this summer and got in the weight room, we might be surprised by their performance next year, but it takes complete dedication and someone pushing them constantly.
