Lawrence, Kansas

Jayhawk fans: I've always heard that Lawrence is a great college town. Smallish, but with a pretty setting, great atmosphere, a vibrant downtown and great neighborhoods. How does it compare to other Big 12 towns?

Lawrence is a great town. It's kind of a blue oasis in the middle of a largely red state. The hippies on the city council in the 60s and 70s refused to the downtown get lost to the big box stores and malls so it kind of has an old school feel to it. Lots of bars and restaurants with little shops mixed in. It's a town of about 80k now and has a pretty vibrant culture, plus it's in a pretty beautiful part of the state and has a wonderful campus.

It compares well with the other big 12 towns, it's similar to Austin but much smaller and has some of the eccentricities of Boulder.

Lawrence is hard to beat and what you've heard is spot on. Although it has a population of around 80,000, it still maintains an authentic college town atmosphere. Another nice thing about Lawrence is its 35 minute proximity to Kansas City, so if you're in the mood for a big city weekend experience, it's readily available to you.

The only other Big 12 towns that can compete are Austin and Boulder, IMO. Of course, I'm not the most objective person to ask.

I've heard it compared to Boulder too. I've also heard it compared to Berkeley, CA and Eugene, Oregon (UO's home). Berkeley is a great town with holdovers from the 60s. Eugene is the same way. Unfortunately for Eugene, they let their downtown go and it is not in such good shape.

People have compared Portland to Austin since they are semi-comparable in size with a lively cultural scene.

I'd love to come out for a visit one day to Lawrence. Have your AD schedule PSU for a early season basketball game. Then I could catch a hoop game and a football game too.

Portland has its share of aging hippies in and around town. Many find refuge on the PSU campus reliving "the good old days" when they basically ran the campus and the rest all either own various "new age" shops on Hawthorne Street or live in Southeast Portland.

Football would be fun. However, I'm not sure how keen they are about scheduling FCS teams. :-\

I would readily agree with that. Lawrence (though I am biased) is by far the best college town in the Big Xii. Great atmosphere on game days, but great atmosphere on most days to tell the truth. The next two, in order, would be Boulder and then Austin. I haven't been to all of them, but I can assure you that some of the towns (especially in our North teams) have nothing to offer.

We usually schedule one FCS team a year.
