League Suspends NAU Player

OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 19, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has suspended Northern Arizona football player Matt Estrada for an illegal hit in last Saturday’s game against Weber State, the league announced Wednesday.

Estrada, a junior safety from LaHabra, Calif., will serve a one-game suspension this Saturday when Northern Arizona plays host to Eastern Washington.

Estrada was involved in a helmet-to-helmet hit above the shoulders on a defenseless Weber State wide receiver with 9:01 to play in the second quarter of the Lumberjacks’ 27-9 loss to Weber State last Saturday in Ogden, Utah.

"When we have these types of hits now, commissioners are instructed to review the plays, and identify and suspend any players who are in violation of the rule,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. "These types of hits are highly dangerous for the opponent, but equally dangerous for the player delivering the hit.

Rule 9-1-3 of the NCAA Football Rulebook states that: a) No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. b) No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders.

"This is the second play like this we’ve reviewed this season,’’ Fullerton. "As in the case with the first, we asked for an additional review by David Parry, the national coordinator of NCAA football officials. He once again concurred with our decision.’’

This is the same clown (#5) who began yelling at the east side fans, telling them to shutup, after a nice return was called back for holding, and carried on for about 10 minutes. Who's shutting up now! Punk! Karma, baby, Karma.

Clowns abound on all sides of sports both as fans and players. Don't think that Weber State players are above letting opposing fans get to them and reacting in an immature manner, though. The heat of the moment does not always bring out the best.

An acquaintance of mine was in attendance on Saturday in Ogden and said that snowballs were being thrown by the Weber State student section at the NAU sideline/players. That could possibly be a reason a player was getting into it with the crowd?

I condone neither action but have always felt that it's best for the home field fans to sanction/police/educate your own when they are acting like asses. All it takes is a few jerks to cast the rest of the fans in a negative manner.

That being said....your football team won fair and square last Saturday. Kudos to them for dealing well with some crappy weather conditions. If you beat Cal-Poly and get a bid, I wish the Wildcats the best.

Thanks for chiming in, MT Jack, and welcome to our board!

How do you think the Lumberjacks will handle the Eagles this week?!??

Snowballs? Come on. I was sitting near what was, I guess, a student section and absolutely no one was throwing anything. Remember, there were very few fans at the game and those that were did nothing offensive. And further more, Weber fans are generally apathetic towards much of anything. I wouldn't think you would ever see that kind of behavior in Ogden. I have sat behind the visiting team all year and to tell you the truth the NAU players and coaches were as well behaved as any of the teams I've seen this year. Except for that tool #5. He was a total ahole! I just wish someone on NAU's team would have had the sense to tell him to shut his mouth.

I am not normally a conspiracy nut, but has anyone else considered the possibility that the Conference leadership has their knives out for Mac and Weber State?

In a normal year, Weber would be the front runner for the at-large bid, due to owning the head-to-head over EWU, assuming that UM prevails over he Bobcats. Has anyone else read commissioner O'Day's comments lauding EWU and downplaying Weber's chances? Is it just a coincidence that NAU's most prolific tackler has been suspended for the EWU game? Montana committed worse blocks against Ryan Eastman this year, and against Derek Johnson a couple of years ago. Was Montana punished this year?
