OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 19, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has suspended Northern Arizona football player Matt Estrada for an illegal hit in last Saturday’s game against Weber State, the league announced Wednesday.
Estrada, a junior safety from LaHabra, Calif., will serve a one-game suspension this Saturday when Northern Arizona plays host to Eastern Washington.
Estrada was involved in a helmet-to-helmet hit above the shoulders on a defenseless Weber State wide receiver with 9:01 to play in the second quarter of the Lumberjacks’ 27-9 loss to Weber State last Saturday in Ogden, Utah.
"When we have these types of hits now, commissioners are instructed to review the plays, and identify and suspend any players who are in violation of the rule,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. "These types of hits are highly dangerous for the opponent, but equally dangerous for the player delivering the hit.
Rule 9-1-3 of the NCAA Football Rulebook states that: a) No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. b) No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders.
"This is the second play like this we’ve reviewed this season,’’ Fullerton. "As in the case with the first, we asked for an additional review by David Parry, the national coordinator of NCAA football officials. He once again concurred with our decision.’’
