Letter from Glanville

Did anybody else get the letter from JG in the mail? I received a letter with an enclosed survey asking for opinions on the 2007 season. This letter tells me that JG will certainly return for 2008 and that the Athletics Dept. is really listening to fans for the first time in a long time. I encourage everyone who receives the survey to return it and voice their opinions about how to improve the fan experience for 2008.

I would really, really appreciate if they came up with some way to communicate with the program directly. A forum or even just a comments section or a guest book on goviks.com would do it.

I did not get the letter (are you on some kind of mailing list?), but I, too, urge everyone who gets one to support and encourage our team.

I think it went to season ticket holders. The letter is well phrased and the survey encourages the thought that the Athletics Dept. is in a listening mode. This was thoughful and it coming right at the end of the season is a sign we'll hit the 2008 season running.

We discussed a bunch of ideas last summer on the OregonLive Forum and maybe here too. Some of the areas of consensus included:

o The Band (Marching Band or Band-in-the-Stands) for playing fight song and drum cadence rhythm with the possibility of recruiting local area CC students who were planning on transfering to PSU (co-enrollment students). Also the idea of opening recruiting to all PSU students who are not in the music program. High emphasis on Opera Theater and so playing in a marching band may pale by comparison.

o The PA Speaker System. This is a big problem. The sound system has to be improved to a high quality system in which the PA announcer can be easily understood. The quality and professionalism of the PA announcer also needs to be improved.

o Eastside Grandstands. People would much rather sit alongside the field than in the endzone cheap seats.

We could take notes and emulate Missoula game day experience. They employ many good ideas to make their game day experience a memorable pleasure. We can learn from many programs, including McNeese State.

o We could also ask Timber Jim's help in getting the crowd going. More than anything, we need wise emotions leadership to make the PSU game day event attractive.

o I think we need to colorize our endzones with "Portland State" and "Vikings". Since we're limited to green and white---and the field is already green and white---I think we should employ varying shades of green in a design to make the endzones >PoP!< Years ago we used white chalk. Maybe we could use chalk of varying color shades.

o We have to look like we're serious about making good and wise designs to delight the emotional palate of our very own football gods .

What about the Viking symbol/sign at midfield? That's put in place for every home PSU football game, yes?

If that is the case, can we not put a request in (and pay for) endzone inserts for PSU football? With that, we could probably get pretty creative in the design. Black enzones anyone?

I never thought about the endzone issue, but that is a good point. It would be nice to see "PSU" or "Vikings" in bold type. The spear logo might be kinda cool, too.

Another item would be the newly installed video board.

In my opinion it was under-utilized. We need replays, up to the minute statistics, FBS/FCS scores.

A cool collection of historic Viking plays would be quite neat as well. They are up on youtube, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

We could just play the first 25 seconds of the 1993 highlight video:

If a PSU linebacker stiff arming the QB who threw the pass that he just intercepted, then rumbling into the endzone with the ball raised doesn't get your Viking blood pumping, I don't know what does.

How about blackened enzones with "Portland State" on one side and "Vikings" on the other (both in white) and then the Viking Spear as the accent (in brilliant green---almost flourescent) going through the middle of each name?
