PSU Readies Lincoln Hall for the next 100 years

Harold Schnitzer, Gerry Frank and Mel Blanc all went to high school in this building.

There is already the Arlene Schnitzer performing arts venue. Perhaps something befitting Harry Schnitzer could be set up within Lincoln Hall. He is not a graduate of Portland State, but he is a performing arts benefactor whose name is forever associated with the Lincoln Hall building and the City of Portland. More a sustaining tribute to him as a "Son of Portland" and the building's legacy. "If these old walls could talk ..."

Gerry Meier is, of course, associated with Meier & Frank (purchased by Macy's), a longstanding, fashionable Portland department store institution whose association also magnifies the Lincoln Hall building and City. Something to tie him in could also be wrestled with and brought to light in his honor.

Most of all, we need a "Mel Blanc Studio." Again, he is not a graduate of PSU but is a superb legacy of the Lincoln Hall building and one of Portland's most beloved entertainers of all time. The university has the opportunity to claim the role of affectionately preserving memory of his cultural impact, to be the sustainer of the "big picture" of his legacy as well as the archivist and the curator of what he was able to develop within himself within the walls of this very building. There are certainly the ways and means to connect-the-dots to honor Mel Blanc as a "Son of Portland" within the building of his formative academic, social and theatrical legacy.

An analogous situation resides within Georgia State University in Atlanta. The prolific songwriter Johnny Mercer, though not a graduate of GSU, has his collection and legacy honored and housed within the GSU Library, similar to how PSU has a collective representation of (Basketball Alum) Michael Richardson's contribution to the culture through his creation of Dark Horse Comics.

Portland has real comparative strengths in comic-book style dynamic imagery, ovational stage performance and anticipatory "theater of the mind" type radio. Portland State needs to honor each of these creative genres.

Arts space added to PSU’s Lincoln Hall

Howard S. Wright is building a Boora Architects-designed tower on the eastern façade of Lincoln Hall at Portland State University. When completed this fall, the Southwest Broadway-facing side of the building will feature a three-story glass tower that will give passers-by a glimpse into acting, dancing, and student gallery spaces.
