Other than struggling to hit open shots early in the game, we didn't look too bad last night.
Some thoughts:
- All I want for Christmas is for Braxton Tucker to stay healthy all season. Albeit versus a lower division program, he looked real good.
- Is it me or did Montie Luenen hit the weights in the off season? He looks to have bulked up.
- Comments have been made over the past couple of seasons about our team not having a leader step up. There was something about Gengler that makes me think that he's going to be the guy to step up this season. Not sure what it was I saw last night but I just have a feeling.
- If we can force turnovers and run the court like we did last night good things will happen. We traditionally look sloppy in the first game or two of the year, but last night we were pretty crisp on offense (24 assists!) with the starters in and very active on defense. I really like the constant ball pressure that we had. Probably a direct correlation to the 14 steals we had.
- Free throws: clank. Not again.
- Interesting to see us go with the bigger lineup late in the second half with Okonkwo and Rumel rumbling around out there. Rumel looks promising. However, Okonkwo still looks like he's not sure about what is going on when on offense. Get deep and post the smaller guy up!
- Holloway looked good in extended minutes. I think that was probably about double of what he usually plays.
- Farris is going to be fun to watch this year. I know we like to go small at times, but I think he'll really help out when we need some much needed size on the post. Likes to go to the left too.
It'll be interesting to see how we look against a Pac 12 program next week, but last night we had some strong points. Who knows, maybe we can sneak up on some teams in the Big Sky this season.
