LOIs are coming in

The BYU transfer is Kainoa Fuiava (6'4", 295#), and it appears he has 3 years of eligibility (according to his BYU bio)...

It's nice that we're able to sign so many Utah kids, normally we just sign a few every year. I think that Utah's basically a pretty good football state when you consider that there's almost twice as many people that live in Utah as there is in this state. Also there's a lot of big, huge Polynesians that have lived down there that have gone on to play college football.

It's possible that all 6 freshmen from Utah might serve missions, as well as the kid from Portland. Not a given, but no surprises if they do.

I think at least 4 of these players are mission kids and 3 or 4 are partials. This would explain why the class appears so big. Looks like we got more players that had other FCS offers then in the past. We will see in 3 or 4 years how good this class is.

Worth the time to watch Coach Phenicie talk about this class. You don't have to be on Facebook to watch the presser. He explains the numbers, talks mission kids, and talks about recruiting IL, FL, and NJ. Also sounds like Portland State is one of those schools who talks shit about other schools when competing with them for recruits.

I'd be interested to see a comparative list of who was recruited vs. who actually signed. Seemed like there were many more safeties recruited.

With 23 signees I'm guessing 5-6 kids take their missions, that's just a big, big class and I think they only had 14-15 to give out.

Just a guess on my part.

The final totals showed three JUCO's and one drop down (from BYU) for those keeping score at home.

From KSL (Salt Lake TV):

SALT LAKE CITY — Not everyone who plays high school football in Utah can go to BYU, Utah or Utah State.

Several of them, at least in the Class of 2018, found their way to Pocatello, Idaho, including former Syracuse quarterback Ty Metcalfe and Alta running back Tu'u Afu.

Idaho State signed six players from the state of Utah, leading all Division I universities not from the Beehive State as national signing day wrapped up Wednesday.

Former BYU defensive lineman Kainoa Fuiava also found his way to the Bengals during Wednesday's celebrations. The Downey, California, native played one season with the Cougars in 2017 after redshirting the 2016 season.

I think three JUCO's and one step down is a good number for this class. I predicted a total of six for this class. The good news is three are already on campus and one wii be on campus during the summer after getting his AA degree.

...Thanks SLCBengal for the list from KSL of where Utah kids had signed to go to school.....found it interesting that not one was listed as going to Weber ....nor SUU....maybe they had signed a few during the early period and they were just not listed......

Here is the list of all the Big Sky signings. As you surmised, both Weber and SUU signed a number of Utah kids early. http://www.bigskyconf.com/news/2018/2/7/football-2018-national-signing-day-lists-for-big-sky-conference-schools.aspx

Agree, both Crane and Horton have great upside. I believe Crane only played one year of high school football. He has the athletic ability and the frame to be a force. Horton appears ready to play sooner then later. If we were not returning a number of good receivers I would say he might play right away and he still might, but it is nice we have the depth that we could redshirt him and give him that extra year.

That receiving core is going to be great for the next few years. Mitch Guellar, Michael Dean, Tanner Conner, Scooby Reynolds, Tre Bell, Matt Peterson, Tristan Beard, Isaiah Brimmer, Tracey Reynolds, Demonte Horton, Jeffrey Harris, I think there was a mission kid from a couple years ago who signed with ISU Josh Crane who should be scheduled to return from his mission this season as well. That is a very good receiving corps, the GREAT news is that none of them expire there eligibility due to graduation after this season either

The 3 JC's (OL, DB, LB) and the drop down (DL) all have to be big time contributors next season. Who else out of this class do you think might find their way onto the field next season? I think most are redshirt/mission players which is not a bad thing. I do think one or two of the young DB's might push for playing time since that is an area we need to improve the most to compete for a play-off spot. Horton also might be too good to keep off the field even with all those receivers coming back.

Devin Dabich at CB could get some on field action I believe. He looks long and rangy and with losing Brandon Monroe to transfer, Caleb Brown and Koby Lowe are the only two that had a high number of reps last season (we do obviously get Anthony ricks back this year so that helps). So I could see Dabich pushing for playing time there as a rotational CB. I could see one of the D-Ends (Pinkney, Tatafu, Tonga, Crane) pushing for playing time because we lost Mason Jackson and micah breland off last seasons roster as rotational DE's and we need a better pash rush SOMEHOW, I firmly believe that was one of our main problems on defense the last two seasons was an inability to get any consistent pressure on the QB from our front, most of the "big plays" we gave up on defense in the pass game was a result of the QB having all day to get comfy in the pocket, got to find a way to get pressure on the qb. so maybe one of those freshman DE's can be a rotational DE.

Of the young DE's I think Crane could fill the role as a pass rush specialist. Even though he is raw his skill set is more towards a pass rush player right now then the other 3. As he gains experience, strength, and size he will be a very good every down player. If we stay with a 3-4 base I can see him as a Buck LB used on passing downs as well. And yes we have to be able to get pressure bringing 4 and not always have to bring 5 or 6 and hope we can cover man to man.
